Halloween

Halloweekend 2016

November 3, 2016 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan Leave a Comment

Hey guys, how is everybody? Did you all have fun over the long Halloween weekend? We definitely did.

Our family is big on Halloween, and I’m happy that this year we were able to do a little bit of Halloweening at home. Finally! The main festivities still happened at my parents’ place, since Halloween in Alabang is awesome, but I really made sure we had a few fun activities at our house, too.

#notglutenfree Cutest. Halloween. Donuts. Ever. And there is absolutely no saying no to @krispykremeph. So I already know that all day today, I’m gonna be telling this kid to stop scratching. ? #noselfcontrol #krispykremeph #bestpasalubongever #halloween #littlemrc #cheatday

The kiddo was on mid-year school break, so it was the perfect time for us to get crafty, and work in the kitchen together. Honestly, I really made an effort to think of gadget-free activities that would keep him occupied just to be sure that he would take a break from playing on his iPad.

My rule is, no iPad on school days (including weekends) but during school breaks I will allow him to play video games all he wants. My mom did it this way when I was a kid, and it worked for us. But then it was easier at our house because I had siblings to play with on gadget-free days. So now with Little MrC, his dad and I have to keep him entertained. I think I did okay.

Our first Halloween sembreak activity was to make super cute, really easy, popsicle stick crafts, which we used as decor at home.

Today’s #sembreak activity: Getting ready for #Halloween with the little boy! We don’t have any spooky decorations, so I thought it would be nice for us to #DIY some. ? #craftyhalloween #gadgetfreefun #artsandcrafts #handmade #homedecor

For this, we just searched for pegs on Pinterest, and started working from there. I’ve also started looking for Christmas craft ideas. I feel like I should encourage my kid to do more of these projects with me because they don’t do that many hands-on projects anymore at school. Most of their projects are now done on the iPad. It’s kinda sad, but looking at it from a different perspective, I find his Garage Band and iMovie skills impressive naman. So I guess it’s not all that bad.

Anyway.

One thing they have been doing a lot more of in school is cooking. The Home Economics curriculum has improved so much since I was a student. A lot of the lessons are more practical now. So, now that I know that he can work a little in the kitchen, I figured it was time to get the kiddo to make a meal with me.

// Breakfast // I made #champorado today with every intention of drawing spiderwebs on it using condensed milk. Someone is obviously excited over Halloweekend!! ?? #halloween #spooky #playingwithfood

I know, I know, I know, some kids his age are already capable of making simple meals on their own. But you have to remember that I also just recently learned how to cook. Being able to share the task, and teach him while I’m at it, is a huge deal for me. Baby steps lang.

From the start, Little MrC was excited about preparing our Halloween-themed meal. My plan was to take care of all the ingredient prep and actual cooking, and I let him do the decorating.

We made baked mozzarella-stuffed “eyeball” meatballs in bloody marinara sauce, mummy potato skin pizzas, and spotty rice pilaf. The mummies were much nicer before I baked them. I think I should have chosen a less-melty type of cheese for this. Still, everything was super yummy, and 100% made with love.

Halloween day, like I said, was spent at my mom’s place. We went around the village, got lots of candy, and then had an early dinner with the family. My cousin joined us, along with her new baby, and that was a real treat. The baby was dressed as the cutest scuba diver I ever did see.

Working on my post-Halloween blog post today. One of the highlights of the occasion was when I finally got to meet this adorable baby scuba diver, Andi. So much cuteness! I could seriously eat her up. #babiesofinstagram

For the first time ever, I took charge of the boys’ costumes this year, and I have to say I’m super proud of the outcome. Don’t my stick men look awesome? Ako naman, walang costume, because I decided to be the designated driver this time. It’s always been MrC driving us around, and I thought it would be nice to (finally) give him a break.

Also for the first time, we had a Halloween-themed buffet at my mom’s. The lovely people from White Box sent us a dessert bar decor box sampler, and we were super excited to use it. Kaya lang we had no desserts to display lol. So instead of cupcakes and sweet treats, we had pasta trays and baked ribs in our spread. I think it ended up looking awesome anyway.

Waahhh I wish I had a nicer photo of our setup! We were in such a rush that I wasn’t able to take a good one.

So that was Halloween weekend for us. Can’t wait til next year. For now, it’s time for us to shift to Christmas mode! So exciting!!!

Steven Universe for Halloween

November 3, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 10 Comments

I don’t know about you guys, but I love Halloween. It’s become even more fun now that the boys and I can coordinate costumes. We haven’t been able to do this every year, though we often tried. And honestly, we haven’t put a whole lot of effort into building our costumes, really, until this year.

Little MrC decided he wanted to be Steven Universe. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the character, he is from a Cartoon Network show. MrC and I are both so exposed to this cartoon coz the kid watches it all.the.time, so we were super game to have it as our costume theme.

Obviously, the little boy in the photo is Steven, and the three beings (coz they aren’t exactly women) around him are the Crystal Gems. I decided right away that I wanted to be Amethyst, the purple gem. I thought that MrC would choose to be one of the other two, but I guess that wasn’t a challenging enough costume for him. Instead, he decided he would be Lion.

And so the costume shopping and DIY-ing began about two weeks before Halloween. I was honestly pretty proud of what we ended up with on Trick or Treat day! Don’t you think we look cute?

Tada!
Tada!

We had a great time trick or treating, and I got a new top and sneakers, too. Bonus! All in all, it was a good Halloween for us.

What did you guys dress up as last Halloween?

Do You DIY? Halloween Costume Ideas for Crafty Moms

October 9, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 6 Comments

My brother is the king of Halloween costume DIY. I’m serious. Over the years he has put in an insane amount of time and effort into his costumes. Just to prove my point, I’ve stolen some photos of his past costumes from his Facebook page so that I can show you. His usual partner in crime is his girlfriend, and together they’ve been (clockwise from upper left) Gold Dust and The Macho Man Randy Savage, Mary (not in photo) and her Little Lamb, Billy the Puppet from Saw and a victim in a trap, and Classic TV Batman and Robin. Yes, he made these all. From scratch. That lamb costume is made out of a hoodie and cotton balls!

Guys, remember that stealing photos online is bad, and can get you into serious trouble. Don’t be like me. And sorry, brother, for taking your photos without asking for permission first.

Anyway… I have had my fair share of DIY costumes, though I must admit that the ones I’ve made are not as elaborate as my brother’s. For the most part, they weren’t even entirely made by me hehehe. Still, they were all created with love, and that’s what counts! On the left, I’m with my former team from my working mom days, and we were all crayons for Halloween. Next to it is Little MrC’s costume from last year, Ben10. The shirt was painted by MrC!

Aren’t we all so cute?

This year, the boys and I are going for Steven Universe as our theme. The kiddo will be Steven, I’ll be Amethyst and MrC will be Lion. We are DIY-ing, and I really hope we can pull it off!

How about you? Are you thinking about going the DIY way with your kids’ costumes this Halloween? We’ve come up with a great list of easy DIY costume ideas on The Asian Parent Philippines. Let me know if you end up trying any of these costumes. I’d love to see your photos, k?

Halloween, A Homecoming, and A Recipe for Sinigang

November 26, 2013 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 5 Comments

Two weeks ago, I excitedly announced my return to my online world with a post about Blogapalooza. Guess what? I ended up missing that event, and going another couple of weeks without being able to post anything here. Yep, I’ve been a very busy bee. The good news is that since I’ve been busy living my life, I now have a whole collection of stories to write!

October ended on a super high note for me with two fab workshops, quality time with family, and a much-awaited homecoming. One of the highlights was a Tunisian Crochet for Beginners session that I attended. I love when I get to be a workshop participant instead of an organizer, for a change. The week after, our Manila Workshops team pulled off a successful, first-ever WAHMderful Weekend, which, for me, was the day that I became a certified WAHM.

The last day of the month was extra special for our family. During the day, the boys and I did our usual rounds of the village for Halloween. Here’s a photo of our little Ben10 going around for candy, plus a few other interesting costumes we saw that afternoon.

Halloween Events in the South!

October 21, 2013 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 2 Comments

As with most Filipinos, I get really excited when the -ber months come along because I just love the holidays! For me though, the season doesn’t officially start until Halloween. Yup, our family is really big on Halloween! When we were younger, we would even have open-house parties at home, where everyone would be in costume. My siblings actually continue to dress up and go out to Halloween parties up until now. As for me, I’m happy to have an excuse to go trick or treating again now that my little boy is old enough to enjoy it too.

Of course, with me being the south person that I am, my go-to October 31 events are all within the south area. Apart from trick or treating in our village though, I’m not yet sure which other events the boys and I will be heading to this year. If you happen to find yourself around here on Halloween, you may want to check out these great parties and celebrations.

Acacia Hotel , which celebrates is 2nd year this October, is having two parties this Halloween – one for the little kids and another for the big kids. The afternoon session for kids will take place at the Grand Acacia Ballroom, and will have loads of entertainment, games and fun activities, loot bags, trick or treat, raffle prizes and a yummy snack buffet. Tickets are at Php 995 nett per person, and children 2 years of age and below are free of charge. You may call 720 2000 to purchase your tickets.
