I Made A Bet With My Grandmother

March 5, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 30 Comments

Yes, people of the world, you read that one right. I made a bet with my grandmother. It happened over lunch at her house on my birthday. We were joking about my weight, like we always do, with her telling me that I’m pretty but unfortunately I’m chunky, and me saying that, well, it would be difficult if I were perfect, in response. This is a dialogue that she and I have each time we see each other, without fail. I think she’s been on my case about my chubby bunny-ness for over a decade now.

Here’s a 2010 photo I took of my lola with my equally beautiful mom

Now, just so you know, my grandmother had movie star looks when she was younger. Even now, when you see her, you’d say she’s really pretty for an old lady. She’s one of those people who really takes care to look her best, and I suppose that’s why she bugs me about the way I look. I think maybe she feels that I’ve let go after having a kid and getting married.

The bet.

I honestly can’t remember how our kidding led to this bet. All I remember was her saying that she doesn’t think I can lose the weight any more, and me asking if she’d like to bet on it. Much to my surprise, she said yes. I asked what she’d give me if I won and she said anything I want. Of course, I said a house. An she laughed and said she’s confident enough to say okay coz she’s pretty sure I can no longer go back to being my thinner self. Note that I said “my thinner self” and not “thin”, because I never was thin. I was born chunky, and that’s why I don’t really have extreme insecurities as far as my weight goes.

Amid a lot of laughter, we decided that this bet was on. I know I won’t really be asking her for a house if I make it. But that little competitive side of me won’t stop bugging me to go for it just to show her that I can do it. I suppose I’d like to show myself that I can too, even just a little bit.

Diet? What diet?

Funny how, as I was telling MrC this story, he told me that I never really took any of these diet or exercise commitments I’ve made seriously. I never saw it as that. But of course, now that I’m looking back, I do see the halfheartedness that led to countless weight loss and wellness goals that remain unfulfilled. I’m talking about this and this and this and this and this and this. And those are just the ones that I blogged about, so you get what I mean when I say countless, right? Ugh. I think I might have too much self-love for my own good sometimes. How am I ever going to win this bet?

The good news is I actually have an instant jump start now that Lent is here. Yes, my Lenten sacrifices often involve food, simply because food is something I love. So each year, I try to go the whole 40 days without a certain something. A couple of years ago I gave up coffee. Most of the time I give up meat with feet. This year’s Lenten commitment for me is no white rice, no white bread, and no meat with feet. And I have to do it for a month and a week, so that should be enough time for me to get used to the switch.

For good.

I am actually planning to permanently shift to wheat bread and brown rice. This is something that’s easy enough for me to manage without affecting the meal planning for the rest of our household, whose members only eat the white stuff. As for giving up meat with feet completely, I don’t think I can or want to do that just yet. But let’s see. I read somewhere that the reason why Jared Leto‘s hair is so fab is because he’s vegan, and believe me, I want fab hair like his too. But right now, life without ever having a steak again doesn’t sound to me like a very happy life. But still, let’s see. Oh and yes, I really had to mention Jared Leto, who was my Mr Dream Boy during his My So Called Life days, was resurrected as my Mr Dream Boy when I first discovered 30 Seconds to Mars, and is now officially my Mr Dream Boy forever after this year’s awards show season. *Insert dreamy sigh here*

Guys, seriously, I want to win this bet. Cheer me on, send me some tips, or whatever, in the comments. I can do this. Yes, I can.

The Lazada Ultimate Gadget Craze Is On! Can Someone Please Feed My Tech Envy?

March 4, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 6 Comments

I have this really bad, insatiable tech envy. I have a constant desire to upgrade my gadgets and devices, and whenever I see friends or family members with new toys, I really do get jealous. It’s a mildly dangerous and really expensive personal issue, but there have been times when I got lucky with promotions and discounts, and that made things kinda better. Kinda.

Thing is, over the past few weeks I’ve been ranting about how the phone I’m using for Instagram, a hand-me-down Samsung Galaxy Y (or Galaxy Why, as MrC calls it), is slowly but surely dying. Grrr. It’s so frustrating because my main phone is actually a BlackBerry, and well, there’s no Instagram for BlackBerry, as you know. So I’ve been making do with the dying phone. Can’t complain since I got it for free, technically, but well, it wouldn’t hurt if it had a better camera right? And, of course, if it wasn’t on the brink of conking out.

I know that a new phone shouldn’t be a priority for me right now. It’s one of those needs vs wants things. And then, just when I was starting to feel hopeless, I saw this.

Let’s Make This Summer A Meaningful One

March 3, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 20 Comments

Today is the first Monday of March, and also the first of the last four Mondays for this school year. I think I need a minute to let that sink in. Wow. Summer really is fast approaching, and I can’t even pretend that I don’t feel it lurking around the corner coz it’s been so hot out lately!

I mentioned before that summer is a challenge for me because I have no clue how I’m gonna keep my son busy enough over those 2 months. I want him to enjoy, to still learn, and of course I’ll need time to work. I refuse to work late at night like I used to. Sorry, but sleep is a must for me these days. That means I need to be creative. I think I’ve taken for granted the fact that my son is in school for 8 hours a day, and I get this amazingly long window of time to work and run errands. The thought of having to figure out what to do for 8 whole hours, every day, for 2 months scares me a little. Or maybe a lot.

I want to be prepared, so as early as now I’ve started planning. Luckily, I was invited to attend a #BetterMe session with the SoMoms a few weeks ago about strengthening and developing better family habits over the summer. It was just what I needed, so of course I jumped at the chance to attend, even if it meant crossing the Skyway AND my favorite EDSA so that I could be at Megamall by 10 AM on a school day. Yes, that’s how bad I wanted to be there, coz I knew that I needed all the tips I could get. Let me tell you, the session did not disappoint.

Super awesome learning session with Coach Pia, The One Core and The SoMoms
Okay fine, I also really wanted to eat at Dad’s Ultimate Buffet. Haha!

Coach Pia shares these very simple, yet very “Aha!” tips in planning a meaningful summer for your family. I say these are “Aha!” tips because they kind of open your eyes to what you may or may not already be doing. Also which things you might think you are doing right, but, in fact, are not.

1. It’s not about you.

I, honestly, am guilty of pre-planning summer classes for my son based on what I used to do during my childhood summers. Who else is guilty of this, raise your hands? I was thinking about soccer classes, swimming, tennis, maybe piano, all the stuff I did before. I was surprised when Little MrC told me that he wanted to try voice lessons and that his friend was taking them. I guess I might have overlooked the fact that he had his own ideas about what to do over the summer too. Remember, summer is not an opportunity for you to bring your child to the program of your dreams.

Four tips from Coach Pia on how you can plan a meaningful summer

2. Don’t just sign up and then inform the child after .

Coach Pia pointed out that this was where a lot of parental frustration stems from. If you enroll your child in something that you chose and he or she ends up not liking it, you feel frustrated. But then, the whole situation could have been avoided if you had just asked your child first before actually signing up.

3. Trial and error.

Number 3 was a super “Aha!” moment for me. Trial and error – it sounds so simple, and yet I never thought to do it the way Coach Pia suggests. Expose your child to different possibilities by having him or her observe a class. Or, even better, take advantage of trial sessions. Also, don’t enroll for a full course right away. Start with maybe 4 sessions first, max, then see how it goes from there. And here I was planning to sign up for 12 sessions of soccer at the onset. Thank goodness I hadn’t yet, because after observing a class at a nearby field, it didn’t seem like my little boy was THAT into the sport. Oh well. Finally, ask in advance and give your kid time and room to change his or her mind.

4. Give your kids generic categories of activities that they may want to do.

I love this one! In my case, since my kid chose a music course already, I told him that he might want to think about doing sports or art, too. He told me he’s think about it, so we’ll just have to see from there. But at least for the first week, I already have potential music classes to keep him occupied. Oh thank goodness.

Tip #5, Instagrammed!

5. If your child is more involved in choosing an activity, then he or she tends to stick with it longer.

This is something that I’ve since learned to do. And, well, it works! There’s more commitment there. This goes for big things, like enrolling in summer classes, and small things too, like which art project to do on a weekend afternoon. And just in case your kid decides he or she wants to do something else, don’t show that you’re frustrated or disappointed. Remember that they are still exploring their likes and learning about their skills and talents. It’s good for them to be immersed in different activities so that they can learn while learning more about themselves, too.

6. Guide your child to look back, learn from the experience and move forward with self-knowledge.

And finally, tip number 6. Yes we should allow our kids to explore. But we should also be there to guide them along the way. We, as parents, are the safe place to fall, as Coach Pia says. Whether their experience was good or bad, we are the people that our children will come to. If they had an amazing time, then we should encourage (encourage, not pressure) them to keep on keeping on, especially if we ourselves see that they excel in a particular activity. On the other hand, if things didn’t go so well, we should also be there to listen and to help them find the confidence to keep trying until they find something that will work for them.

Oh, and here’s a bonus tip for those of you with more than one kid. As much as possible, don’t enroll your kids in the same class because it encourages competition and might breed sibling rivalry. My brother and I did most everything together when we were younger and I remember how swimming instructors and tennis coaches would compare our performances. Based on what I went through, I’d say Coach Pia has a really great point here.

This is what it should be about!

Planning for a meaningful summer is actually a team effort that the whole family has to get into together. Lucky for me, Team de Castro-Cuyugan is super solid, and we’re all behind our one and only little boy, 100%. We’re lucky, too, that we have the means to enroll the kiddo in the summer classes of his choosing. As Coach Pia said, the only reason to say no is if your budget can’t accommodate it, and so far this hasn’t been a major problem for us. I just hope he doesn’t as to learn golf anytime soon. Now that’s an expensive sport!

What plans do you have for your kids over the summer?

PS I really hope that you learned (even just a bit) from this post! This is only part one. I’ll be writing about developing better family habits and routines in a separate post coz this one is already super long.

PPS I want to say thank you to The SoMoms and Your Brand Story for inviting me to this event. Thanks also to The One Core and Coach Pia for making amazing sessions like this available to mommies like me. Also to Unilab, who tirelessly supports activities that aims at making us better versions of ourselves. And finally, to The Dad’s, Saisaki and Kamayan group aka Dad’s World Buffet, known to me during my childhood as Triple V, thank you for the amazing lunch and for hosting us last February. I cannot wait to come back and try everything that I wasn’t able to try that day! So. Much. Yummy. Food!

My Current Favorite Blogs To Read

March 2, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 23 Comments

I blog-hop a lot. Ever since I started actively blogging myself, my love for reading blogs has grown steadily. While I love discovering new blogs to read, I do have my list of faves. These are the ones I go to regularly to check if there are any new posts. I comment as often as I can, but sometimes it can be fun to also just lurk and read. Haha. So anyway, here are my seven current fave blog-hop stops, in no particular order.

1. Joei and Me

Joei and I have been blogging friends since college I think. We’re also friends in real life, and that makes things more fun. She and I share a common love for food and for kaartehan. Whenever I am in search of new places to try, or if I want to know if a particular restaurant is good,I check out Joei’s blog. Joei and Me is the only one on my list that is not a mom blog.

2. Roller Coaster Ride

Janice is one of my first mom blogger friends. She is also one of my first WAHM friends. She and I chat like we’ve been friends for ages, when in reality we’ve only known each other for a little over a year. That for me is the stuff great friendships are made of – an instant connection that grows stronger as you learn more about the other person. I love reading her blog because the little bits and pieces of her life as a mom and a super woman totally fascinate me. I love how updated we are with each others’ lives, just like sisters, and our blogs play a big role in our being connected with each other.

3. Make It Blissful

Make it Blissful (formerly Dainty Mom) and Martine are important to me because this was the blog that unknowingly empowered me to take the plunge and become a WAHM. This blog for me is so real and so relateable, that it makes you want to go and do what you love, find your bliss, and chase your dreams. There’s an aspirational aspect to it, too. You see nice things, clean and well-designed spaces, ideas for better living, and you take those things and know that you want them for yourself so much that you go and get them. That’s why I love this site.

Coz I’m boring like that.

4. She Said, she said

I’m pretty sure I met Cyn at a blogging workshop last year. Maybe it was Blog Inspired? Anyway, I love reading the mom and daughter adventures that she and her daughter post on this blog. It reminds me a lot of the time I would spend with my mom when I was a teenager, and until today, actually. There’s so much heart in this blog, and I think that’s why I like it. You get such a happy and inspiring vibe from the entries, and you can see how both women in this mom-daughter tandem are really making an effort to live their lives to the fullest.

5. Wifely Steps

I don’t just love this blog. I love the blogger. Toni, I labyu! She likes books and video games. She’s quirky. She’s motherly. She admits that she’s not perfect, and yet she strives to be all that she can be amid the imperfection. She’s also really pretty hahaha. I met her at Blog Inspired when I was just a newbie mom blogger, and she really inspired me so much. It’s blogs like Wifely Steps that make me want to be a better blogger.

6. Momma N Manila

Mish is my idol. Seriously! When I first met her, I thought she looked so young and fresh and pretty. I was surprised to learn that she had 4 kids. She certainly doesn’t look it. She’s a great writer too, something that I aspire to be. She cooks and bakes, she crafts, she teaches yoga and is super fit. Yes, I sound like I’m fan-girling, but she’s actually my friend and we’re practically neighbors. She has an amazing little girl, Gelli who’s so much fun to be around. I ate cookies with her once, and we had fun, that little girl and I. I’ve learned a lot from Mish in the short time that I’ve known her, lots of lessons on being a mom and being a blogger, and little life tidbits, too.

7. The Happy WAHM.

If I could make one blog-related wish, it would be for Marge to write more often. Bow. She has an amazing talent for storytelling that I believe she should share with all of us. Pressure much? Haha!

So there you go, I hope you guys can check out these fab blogs too. And please share your favorite online reads in the comments. Include your own links, too, okay? Like I said, I’m always on the lookout for new blogs to read.

Texture

February 28, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 17 Comments

Ladies and gents, meet my Abby Jocson bag. I’ve been using this since the end of last year, and I don’t want to have to change it anytime soon. This was given to me as a Christmas present by my sister-in-law. I love the size, the shape, the detachable shoulder strap, the inside and outside pockets – everything about it, basically! What I love the most about this bag though is it’s color and texture. I could have chosen any other style and design, but this was really what I wanted.

Shot with a Sony TX10 camera
Post-processed on Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3

I definitely did better on the photo challenge this week, at least as far as photo subject is concerned. Unfortunately I’m back to using the Sony TX10 coz my dad still has the SLR. Toinks!

Lunch Box Menu for February 28 – March 6

February 27, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 12 Comments

I can’t believe that we are officially entering the last month of the school year! I just realized though that my baon packing days are continuing on til the summer because MrC will be needing sustenance at work. It’s easier with him, though, because I can pack him frozen meals that he can microwave at the office when lunch time rolls around. Anyway, I think I’m getting ahead of myself. Time to deal with the upcoming week first.

Lent is fast approaching and that means I am going to do my annual “no walking meat” panata (promise/commitment). So expect to see more Lent-friendly seafood recipes over the next few weeks. I’ll still be plotting meaty dishes into the meal plan for the boys, though, so those of you with carnivorous taste buds need not worry.

This week’s recipes

This week, I am featuring an easy Baked Fish in Garlic Butter with Dill recipe, which I’ve never posted before, and my super winner Chicken Adobo in it’s new downloadable PDF format. I’m also adding my ever-so reliable Banana Bread recipe, which isn’t exactly mine because I found it in a library book, but I can’t remember what book it was. Yes, I decided to share 3 recipes again this week. And I made sure to make them downloadable. Oh, I also added “branding” on my downloadable content heehee! I forgot to do that last week.

I also am doing a repeat performance of the Beef Salpicao I made last week. Like I said in my previous baon post, each batch of marinade and freeze meals that I do are good for two separate meals. If I don’t get to use them up, I’ll have a rerun week where I clean out the freezer and cook whatever’s there. So I’d rather mix one or two of last week’s dishes in with new stuff for the coming week. I think it’s more fun that way.

Since the baked fish isn’t something you can prepare ahead and freeze, I’m using an old photo of a batch I prepared for a Christmas gathering with friends last December. Sorry it’s kinda blurry. I’ve already put “A phone with a better camera for Instagramming” on my wishlist.

Baked Fish in Garlic Butter with Dill
Baked Fish in Garlic Butter with Dill

Here’s a tip. If you’re packing this for someone who has no access to a microwave, don’t the butter sauce into the lunchbox. The butter tends to solidify when cold, and unless your kid or spouse (or you) like chewing on butter chunks, it won’t be good. Trust me. The cooked fish will be flavorful even without the additional butter.

Grocery notes

The grocery list has everything you need for this week, but if like me, you still have things like sandwich crackers or cooking oil in stock, then you obviously don’t need to buy more. Also, I didn’t put any quantities per item coz it will really depend on how much food you need to prepare, and how many people you are cooking for. There are quantities for ingredients in the recipes, though, so you can do the necessary adjustments. I’m bad at math, so you might wanna just do the multiplying and dividing yourself.

Download away!

Here’s the menu plan for February 28 to March 6 . And here’s the matching grocery list . The recipe links are below:

  • Chicken adobo
  • Baked fish in garlic butter with dill
  • Banana bread

Happy cooking and happy eating! Let me know which recipes you’ve tried, and which ones you like best.
