Confessions of an Occasional Germophobe

April 21, 2016 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 2 Comments

I don’t like dirty things. Sure, I can be messy, but messy doesn’t necessarily mean dirty. Just because things look out of place or cluttered in a space doesn’t mean they aren’t clean. Does that even make sense to you? Because it does to me.

The truth is that I constantly worry about people around me getting sick because of germs. This is, most likely, the effect of having lived with a doctor for 32 years. Because of this, I have a set of cleanliness-related rules that I try my best to enforce at home.

First, I make sure to choose antibacterial soaps for our laundry, dish washing, and baths. We have been loyal Safeguard users for many years.

mrspcuyugan
Not just for bath time – Our dishwashing and laundry soaps both have Safeguard in them.

Also, I absolutely will not allow anyone to sit or lie down on their bed wearing clothes that were worn outside. I just think it’s gross that MrC’s office shirt, for example, which comes into contact with a tricycle seat, a van seat, his office chair, various walls, tables and other surfaces, and even other people throughout the day, will come into contact with my pillow, blanket and bed sheet.

When people come visit our home and sit on the bed wearing clothes they’ve worn outside, I change the sheets before we go to bed. I’m not kidding.

The boys and I do not walk around the house in shoes. We use our house slippers when we are home. We also ask people to remove their shoes and slippers before going up to the second floor of our home. When upstairs, the boys and I go barefoot, too.

We make hand washing a must before meals. I even have bottles of alcohol and hand sanitizer in our living, dining, and bedrooms just in case. I have a slight alcohol-obsession (rubbing, not drinking,) and I usually clean my hands with the stuff in between tasks, when hand washing is not possible.

The list goes on, and on, and on. I could bore you to tears just talking about this.

mrspcuyugan
Did you know that sanitation issues are largely responsible for illnesses like diarrhea, which is a leading cause of child death in the Philippines, right next to malnutrition, pneumonia and injuries?

So where is this conversation going, you may be wondering?

Well, recently, Little MrC and I attended UNICEF and Safeguard’s first Health Watch lecture in celebration of World Health Day. We learned a lot at the session, and a lot of my germy-worries were addressed and validated. It’s good to know that my cleanliness rules are actually good for something.

Intervention should be the priority. Health comes first. I feel like these are the most important lessons we learned that day. Instead of waiting until someone gets sick to do something, we should instead aim to reduce the risk of illness, especially within the home. This can easily be done through proper hand washing with soap.

mrspcuyugan
This handwashing demo was really useful. It surprises me that not a lot of people know how to properly wash their hands, but this is a reality.

Here are some simple tips to make sure that you are washing your hands well enough:

  • Start by wetting your hands well.
  • Lather well and scrub thoroughly. Don’t forget to scrub in between your fingers, and all the way to your wrists.
  • Scrub for at least 20 seconds. You should be good to go after two rounds of the Happy Birthday song. Singing out loud is optional.
  • Rinse well, and make sure that there is no soap left on your hands and wrists.
  • Dry off using a CLEAN towel. Emphasis on clean. I think you know why.

As a final note, we were taught some first aid basics by a representative from the Philippine Red Cross. I love that my son already learned most of this during a father and son camping session that he and MrC attended. At least I know that if there’s ever the need for emergency response at home, my boys are ready to save me. Lol.

mrspcuyugan
Bandaging wounds 101.

As moms, our family’s health and safety should be on top of our list of priorities. Do you have any tips for keeping your households safe and germ-free?

New Seasons, New Reasons

April 4, 2016 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 2 Comments

I think I’ve finally figured out why I’ve been uninspired to blog.

I’ve never been short on desire, time or even post ideas. In fact, I’m the type who can just sit down, start typing, and actually come up with a decent post. Despite all this, I don’t get to write here as often or as consistently as I know I can. And then, literally moments ago, I realized that it’s because my “why” has changed.

Back story.

Three years ago, I wrote a post about why I am inspired to blog. I knew then that I wanted to share my story, whatever that may be. I wanted to be a part of this amazing online community of women who blog. I wanted to have a place where I could write for myself. Ultimately, I blogged because it made me happy.

As life has changed for me over the years, so has my “why.” Not by a lot, but enough to make me re-think things. Let me break it down for you.

In the beginning, I simply wanted to tell stories. I want to go beyond that, from simply telling stories to sharing lessons I’ve learned from them. After all, I need to process the lessons in order to grow, and it’s in sharing these lessons that I can inspire. (OMG, super light bulb moment.)

I hope to be able to impart more wisdom on motherhood and marriage, things that I am pretty sure I’ve been doing right all these years. I am also excited to write about things I’m still learning to do, like turning our house into a home, budgeting, and cleaning and organizing (yuck hahaha!)

mrspcuyugan
Our marriage is certainly not perfect, but it definitely works. Check out my seven tips for a happy married life here.

In the beginning, I only wanted to become a part of the blogging community. Over the years, this group has also been good to me, and I have been able to make wonderful friends. This is something I want to continue doing. More importantly, I want to be able to build actual friendships with the women I meet.

To be honest, I have learned that It isn’t easy translating online friendships to real life. If you go through my archives, you’ll notice that some of the faces you would often see in older photos are no longer present in my more recent posts. I guess that’s really just the way it is.

I have a handful of blog friends whom I consider as real friends, and they are more than enough. I know that I am lucky to have them. And, truth be told, I’d rather have a few real friends than a lot of fake ones.

Mothers Who Brunch
These are a few of my favorite mom bloggers (and our kids!) You can read about this super fun Mothers Who Brunch Halloween event here.

In the beginning, I just wanted to have a place to write. I started out as a newbie blogger the same year I decided to pursue writing as a career. Back then, all I wanted was to be able to see my name in a byline. Five years and several drafts later, I have seen my name in print, not just online but also on paper (Confession: I’d love to see more of it on paper!)

Soon, my name will also be credited on screen. Achievement unlocked! And OMG what an achievement this is.

Having a blog has really helped push me forward as a writer, and this is something that I hope will never stop. I never thought it would make this much of a difference, but it has. Beyond having an instant portfolio that shows how I write, the actual writing practice that I get from blogging helps a lot, too. This “why” is my constant.

mrspcuyugan
Who would have thought that my little and big ideas could actually mean something to other people? Speaking of ideas, in case you find yourself struggling to find things to write about, try doing this.

In the beginning, I blogged simply because it made me happy. It still does. And now, I want my blog to emulate my life’s happiness. I want to share this happiness with anyone who reads what I write. I hope to inspire my readers to live happily, too.

I see this space, after all, as my virtual time capsule of happy moments. Of course there will be bad times, and yes, I may write about them sometimes. I will make sure that, in these posts, I will also try to find (and write about) the good side of things. I know I can. I’m naturally optimistic like that.

mrspcuyugan
This family knows how to be happy and have fun, and I love writing about these spectacular times.

To this list, I am adding a new “why,” and that is to live more. Without living my best life, I know that I will have nothing good to write about. In this sense, blogging can also drive me to live more, do more, feel more, and be more. I continue blog because I want to live better. Makes perfect sense.

That’s why I write.

Now, curious question,  why do you read?  Which of my posts do you like, and what do you hope to see more of? What will keep you coming back?

A Movie a Day for Summer

April 1, 2016 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan Leave a Comment

Confession: I am on a boredom-busting mission this summer.

It’s the first time that we are summering in our own home, which means that the task of keeping Little MrC busy and happy all day falls entirely on my shoulders. We are on day three today, and it’s been good so far.

I have an entire list of things planned for the summer, including picnics and building our garden. Yesssss, lots of outdoor stuff! Even as my son grows older, I still want to make sure that his gadget time is regulated. I’m already having a tough time as it is, now that he has his own phone. Things will get harder once they shift from books to iPads in school. So, gadget-free activities are super musts for us this vacation time.

I feel like, in order to keep boredom at bay, I need to be able to establish a nice daily routine for us, then sprinkle in fun activities to keep things fresh. I got lucky this week as far as fun goes. On the last day of school, my friend Mish had us over for snacks and some play time for the kids. We left early, though, but the kiddo still had fun.

How aliw is this little popcorn machine??? ?

Then there’s routine. This will be the real challenge. I’ve said it before, I’m not good with routines, even for myself. But it must be done!

I’ve decided to anchor our daily schedule on meals, just because those are constant, must-haves during the day. Makes sense, right? Then, we will do different things in the afternoon. So far, we’ve gone to the mall, the supermarket, and my mom’s house. I think it’s a good idea to keep our afternoon schedules free so we can randomly choose to stay at home and lounge, or hang out somewhere.

alabang country club
Since it’s summer, there will be swimming!

It’s our morning schedule that I’ve focused on this first week because I believe that a good start will dictate the rest of the day. The kid and I start with breakfast, and see MrC of. After this, we each get our quiet time. He either plays recorder, chats with his friends on Viber, or plays games on his phone. I’ve been using my quiet time to write (like right now!)

After quiet time comes the highlight of our mornings, movie time. A movie a day – That’s my big plan for summer mornings. We like slow mornings around here, which is why I picked an activity that doesn’t require us to move around. Or shower beforehand. Lol.

Movie time also buys me extra time, truth be told. The kid is quiet and occupied, so I can crochet or write my grocery and to-do lists while we watch.

I’ve been excitedly doing my research for movie time. I got to see a lot of great films growing up, and I can’t wait for my son to see them, too. I’ve also asked him to come up with a list of films that he wants to watch. Our must-see list includes:

  • The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – Can you believe I have not seen this???
  • The Sword in the Stone – A childhood favorite
  • Matilda – MrC’s special request hahaha
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • Where the Wild Things Are
  • Little Women – Just because this is one of my favorite stories of all time
  • All of the Harry Potter movies – So perfect coz the kiddo is reading the books now!
  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh – We’ve already seen this, but I truly could watch it over and over and over again, forever
  • Enchanted – Because McDreamy
  • The Princess Bride
  • School of Rock – For my little music lover
  • The Labyrinth – I tried to make him watch this a couple of years ago, and he got scared lol. Take 2!
  • An American Tale
  • E.T.
  • The Goonies – Another one requested by MrC
  • The Land Before Time
  • My Neighbor Totoro
  • The Iron Giant
  • Hugo

I’ll be constantly updating this post with a list of the movies that we’ve been able to watch, just in case any of you choose to do movie time/day/night, too. Quick note: Little MrC is 10 years old, so most of these are movies for bigger kids. At times, though, we will pick films for younger audiences just because. Ok, fine, it’s because I like them. Lol.

Here’s our summer 2016 movie list:

  1. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip (Rated PG, suitable for kids 6+)
  2. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Rated PG, suitable for kids 7+)
  3. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (Rated PG, suitable for kids 10+)
  4. Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice (Rated PG-13, suitable for kids 13+)
  5. Inside Out (Rated PG, suitable for kids 6+)
  6. Capture the Flag (Rated PG)
  7. Flushed Away (Rated PG, suitable for kids 5+)
  8. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Rated PG, suitable for kids 8+)
  9. Big (Rated PG, suitable for kids 13+)
  10. The Neverending Story (Rated PG, suitable for kids 8+)

On weekends, I hope that the boys and I can go out to catch new movies, too. This weekend, I know we are watching Batman vs Superman for sure. Can’t wait!

Can you guys suggest any good movies for us to add to our list?

Amigurumi Easter Eggs

March 26, 2016 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 4 Comments

Fact:  Amigurumi is a term that covers the beautiful and fun trend of crocheting and knitting stuffed animals, people or even inanimate objects. (Thank you, Craftsy, for the definition!)

crochet by mrsc
This Super Mario Mushroom was one of my first amigurumi projects, and is still one of my favorites. Too cute for words!

Our house is minimalist in design. We are taking it slow, as far as decorating is concerned. Our walls are still bare, and, at the moment, we only have a few photos and mementos displayed.

To make our home feel more homey, I’ve been doing my best to display little handmade pieces here and there. I love these little accents because (1) they aren’t permanent, and (2) they give me the opportunity to experiment with colors, textures and designs around the house.

Crochet by MrsC
A lot of my sample coasters are put to good use at home, for instance.

I started doing this last Christmas when I put up the cutest little reindeer ornament from Ants Pocket on our tree. I have handmade felt ornaments of my own, too, but they’re still tucked away in one of my boxes. For sure, those will be up on on our tree this year along with whatever new things I can find the time to make.

I also recently placed a crocheted table runner in the dining room. Our table isn’t so big so this project didn’t take very long to make. It was easy, too. I saw the diagram for the motif in one of the Instagram accounts I follow, and worked on the piece using yarn I bought in Baguio years ago.

Truth: MrC is happy that some of the yarn he had to carry up Session Road has finally seen some action!

crochet by mrsc
Please focus your attention on my table runner, and not on our dirty glass tabletop. Lol!

My most recent project is a super fun one, just in time for Easter. Over the last few days, I finished working on a few crocheted eggs for our home.

The plain eggs were made using scrap Caron One Pound yarn I had left over from a bag project. For the multicolored ones, I used the tiny bit of Red Heart Super Saver I had left from a beanie that a friend ordered. I love that I’ve found a good way to make use of the little bits of yarn I have stashed away.

In case you are interested in the pattern, I used this free one by Lion Brand Yarns.

Last year, my friend Mish gave me a really pretty glass candle holder, which I have yet to use for its intended purpose. I’ve found that it works well as a display jar of sorts for my little ornaments, and it fits perfectly in my living room, on the end-table next to my couch. Over the holidays it was used for loose Christmas balls. It now holds my colorful, handmade Easter eggs.

I’m already thinking about what ornaments to make for summer, and also for the rest of the year. I can’t wait to fill up my glass jar with all sorts of things. I love working on these small amigurumi projects, and I’m so glad that I now have a nice way to display them at home, too.

I know I’ll be making more runners for our home to match the different occasions and seasons. I already have plans for a brightly colored one for summer, which I’ll be making using my new cake of Sugarfree Yarn.

I know I said I’d stop buying yarn already but I can’t help it. This color combination is exactly what I was looking for, for my summer table runner. Kasya na ba isang cake @thehappywahm??? ???

Shameless plug: If you have something in mind that you’d like me to make for you, send me an email! I love making stuff for friends! 🙂

How are you decorating your home this Easter?

One Less Roommate

March 18, 2016 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 1 Comment

About a month ago, Little MrC decided that it was time for him to start sleeping in his own room. It’s funny how it happened, suddenly and completely out of the blue.

When we first moved here, I was sort of forcing the idea on him, telling him that if he didn’t use his room I’d turn it into my office. He resisted. He wanted to stay in our room. I understood. We all lived in the same room for 9 whole years. Why did moving houses have to change that, right?

mrspcuyugan
In our old room at the old house. He always slept so soundly, right next to MrC and me.

At the time, I was thinking along the lines of finally having more space and some privacy. But I didn’t argue with what the kiddo wanted. Instead, I agreed to have his mattress set up on the floor next to my side of the bed. Every once in a while I’d ask if he was ready to move into his room, and he’d always say no.

Then one day, I found the boys cleaning up that room across the hall. A few days later, the mattress was off my floor, and on the bed frame where it really belonged. And just like that, I was left with one less roommate.

mrspcuyugan
Oops! Someone forgot to make his bed this morning. And yes, his sheets are mismatched. That red pillowcase is from an old Aladdin set, and the blanket is Pocahontas, all from my childhood.

Since he decided to start sleeping on his own, Little MrC has spent less and less time in our room. He only comes there now to watch TV. He has his own airconditioner, so when days are too warm he asks my permission to use it.

He has a desk, which he uses when he wants to write or draw. His dad’s laptop is parked on that desk so he has something to use for research, and (occasionally) for games. He hangs out in his own space to read and play, and to do little boy things, whatever they may be. I’m not sure that I really want to know.

mrspcuyugan
The desk where I learned to write. It’s just as messy now with it’s new owner as it was back then.

Little MrC loves his room. On the way home from school yesterday, he said he couldn’t wait to spend time in his favorite place on Earth. I told him that I was so happy to hear that. I never had a room of my own, so I’m super glad that this is something that his dad and I have been able to give him.

So much has changed for us since we moved houses. As the months go by, it’s becoming more glaringly obvious that my little boy is now a big boy. I’ve officially entered into the realm of tween parenting, and I’m completely terrified and a little bit sad. I don’t know what to expect. I’m afraid to make a mistake. And I miss having a baby around.

At the same time, it’s such a relief that I now have someone I can count on to open the gate for me when we drive home, so I no longer need to get out of the car and do it myself. I can count on him to lock the front door when we leave, and he can open it for me when we get back to the house. He pushes my grocery cart and checks items off of my list.

mrspcuyugan
Favorite books all in a row, guarded by his daddy’s old barrel man.

He does most things by himself now, including homework. His independence means more free time for me, and that MrC and I can now watch movies in our room at night. It also means that I live in fear that this kiddo will grow up too soon, and will someday stop needing me. Or at least think that he no longer needs me. Of course, I know that he’ll come running back eventually (right, mom and dad?) but still…

Ah motherhood, what a huge emotional rollercoaster you are! I never thought it would be this crazy. But it really is worth it, cliche as it may be.

mrspcuyugan
Once upon a time, when we were both a little bit younger. Man, time really does fly by so quickly.

So now, what do I do with all the extra space I now have in my room? Maybe a nice couch? A reading nook? What do you guys think?

And can someone please guide me through this tween parenting thing? Everything here is so new! And so emo! I need all the help I can get. And maybe an extra glass of wine.

What’s Cooking This Week #4

March 5, 2016 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 1 Comment

Confession: Before today, the last time I turned on my laptop was February 24.

Yes, hello, I am back from an unplanned digital detox!

The last two weeks have been spent playing catch-up with life, post-chickenpox house arrest. The kiddo has been doing his best to keep up in class, and make up for everything that he missed. Meanwhile, I’ve been focused on chores and errands, and getting food on the table as always. I was beyond excited when I finally got to go to back to the market. Lol.

In between all of that, I celebrated another birthday, had my hair cut, got a new pair of glasses, and spent time with family and some of my best girlfriends. I think it’s safe to safe that we are now, finally, back to regular programming.

mrspcuyugan
New hair, new glasses, old friends at Bread and Botany.

Since life is back to normal now, meal planning has also resumed. Instead of my usual day-by-day food schedule, though, I am now just making a general list of dishes that I plan to prepare for the week. I find that this is easier on me as far as thinking goes. it’s also more flexible, and flexible is always good.

This coming week, as always, we have a mix of old favorites and new kitchen experiments that I’ve been wanting to try. I’m not packing lunch for the kid since it’s exam week, so I’m not pressured to think of dishes that also work well as baon. Yay for that.

mrspcuyugan
This week’s meal roundup, as posted on my kitchen fridge!

I tend to think ahead to leftovers whenever I plan meals because there are times when I just don’t feel like eating the same thing twice. This is why I love making roast chicken – and I do make this a lot. There’s just so much that you can do with whatever meat you have left. It isn’t unusual for me to keep bags of shredded leftover roast chicken in the freezer, ready and waiting for reincarnation.

Chicken ala king, stir-fried chicken in garlic and oyster sauce, and chicken spaghetti are just some of the new forms that my leftover roasts have taken. I also save the carcasses and use them to make stock. I feel like being in the kitchen really pushes me to be creative, and I love that.

This was dinner from a few nights ago. Haven’t been able to go to the market since chickenpox watch started, so our fridge is near-empty now. Tomorrow is a busy day for me, so the boys will have to make do with leftovers. On Sunday, I shop. Cant wait! ? #itswhatsfordinner #roastedchicken #roastedveggies #instafood #foodstagram #instagood #goodeats #instaeats #athomewithmrsc #homecooked #homecookedmeal

Here are links to some of the recipes I’m using this week, too, in case you want to make them at home. Ah who am I kidding, it’s actually for me, so that I know where to find them when it’s time. Lol. Momnesia.

  • Beef pares
  • Sweet and sour pork
  • Chicken and bean chili
  • Banana muffins

I know that I spend a lot more time planning our meals and working in the kitchen than most moms would like to, which because I really enjoy it. And because I do very little cleaning. I know I should clean more often but I’d honestly rather be cooking.

What’s cooking in your kitchen this week?
