Celebrating The Mind Museum’s Second Birthday

April 5, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 21 Comments

The other Saturday, the boys picked me up from my mommy morning at ECHOYoga Shala so that we could go to The Mind Museum’s Media Family Day to launch their summer programs and celebrate their second anniversary. As soon as I said the words Mind Museum to my two guys, they got super excited because we never got to visit the place before, and they were both really looking forward to the experience. It was thanks to my super amazing Mommy Bloggers Philippines group that we were invited to this event, so I was also looking forward to finally meeting some of my online friends in real life.

Invite and kit

I love how the agency behind this event was really so organized. I received my invitation through email, and they made sure to get all of our names. They also provided us with a parking pass, which is a godsend if you know what parking is like at BGC. When we arrived, the kiddo and I registered while MrC went to park. We were given a small parcel that reminded me of what Snoopy (as in the dog) carries around with him when he travels. This, apparently was the actual invite, and inside there was a mini microscope that we needed for the afternoon. Of course, the little boy immediately declared that all of the contents belonged to him.

At the Kyle’s Lab buffet station

We took a quick look around when we arrived, and then we decided to get something to eat while waiting for the program to begin so that we could go on and explore right after. There was a lot of food, all of which was yummy and fun to eat. Kyle’s Lab served nice sandwiches, tiramisu flower pots (which were both yummy and brilliant, if you ask me), and this super cool iced tea with spheres that burst in your mouth. I thought at first that they were sago, so when they erupted in my mouth, I got really excited like a little kid. Hahaha I’m mababaw like that. There also were panizzas and nachos from Uncle Cheffy, cupcakes, cookies and truffles from Sophie’s Mom, and ever-so-yummy Sebastian’s Ice Cream.

So glad MrC had his camera, too. More photos!
Off we go!

After a quick program, where I learned that most of the exhibits are either made or assembled locally (amazeballs!), we were given a Wide-Eyed Wanderer’s Exploration Passport which had a list of tasks that we were supposed to complete. The first to complete their assigned tasks would win a prize. Right off the bat, I knew we weren’t going to be one of the first because it was difficult to not get sidetracked by all the other things to see, do and read all over the museum. So we decided to take our time and enjoy all of the areas we had to visit instead of rush through them. I think that our experience was worth way more than any prize.

At the Life Gallery, where we met a few Neanderthals
Here’s a closer look at our kinda creepy new friends, through MrC’s lens

Mind Museum representatives were stationed all over the area, putting stickers on our passport for completed tasks, assisting us whenever needed and answering our questions. I love how they are all so knowledgeable about the exhibits and displays, and also how they really take the time to explain things to you. I think that this is super important so that kids and adults who come to visit really learn a lot. And there really is so much information you can pick up in just one afternoon at The Mind Museum. In fact, the boys still weren’t satisfied with time we spent there, and they already want to go back to see the stuff they missed.

Exploring and getting our stickers
Learning while playing

One of my favorite stops was the new Space Shell Planetarium where we watched the newest show that they offer, “Back to the Moon for Good”. It is a story about the Google Lunar Xprize, a space competition where teams race to be the first people to successfully make it back to the moon.

Apart from the areas around the museum that we needed to visit, our passport also required us to go to each of the exhibit booths inside the function area. At these booths, we learned about the summer activities and classes being offered by The Mind Museum. This is a great option for parents who are still thinking about where to enroll your kids for the summer, especially if yours are older kids who are into learning and discovery. Here’s a list of the activities coming up this summer, as well as their corresponding schedules and rates. For Summer Program FAQs and full program details, email  summerprograms@themindmuseum.org .

Summer Adventures

If you’ve never been to The Mind Museum before, I suggest you wear comfy clothes and shoes when you visit. I made the mistake of wearing platform shoes, and so I eventually gave up and sat down with a plate of snacks while the boys continued to walk around. It looks like they had a lot of fun while I chatted with my bloggy mommy friends, coz they came back with the cutest set of photos. Warning: Photo dump coming in 3… 2… 1…

Yay I found photos of me in MrC’s camera!
The boys go exploring without me
MrC tells me that the kitchen display is made of fiberglass or something like that. Looks so real, right?
Who wore it better?

The two eventually got tired, and so it was time to head home. On our way towards the museum exit though, I remembered that I hadn’t seen Stan. Stan is the first T-Rex exhibit in the Philippines, and is cast from real dinosaur fossils. Super cool.

Hi, Stan!

Like I said, the boys are really excited to go back to The Mind Museum. Lucky for us, they are offering a special Summer Day Pass Rate of P450/person for adults, children and private school students, and P150/person for teachers and public school students. What’s even luckier is The Mind Museum gave us a special token of four all-day passes that we can use on our next visit. Now, because I love you guys, I’m thinking of giving away two of these passes to one lucky blog reader, maybe as a giveaway on Little MrC’s birthday. What do you guys think? Who wants to go to The Mind Museum?

Back on the Mat at ECHOyoga Shala

March 30, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 35 Comments

If you would ask me to pick my three favorites from among all of the sports and exercise options in the world, I would choose Zumba, Lawn Tennis and Yoga. This is based on my experiences over two decades of summer classes and activities, plus the rare after office workout that I have engaged in over the years. So, when my good friend Janice invited me to join a group of mommy bloggers in a morning yoga session at the new ECHOyoga Shala, I said yes right away.

Class picture!

This was the first time that I ever attended a class at a real shala. My first yoga experience happened at some grimy old dance studio in Makati near my former office. My workmates and I attended classes there for a couple of months after work. After I had finished up the classes I signed up for though, I didn’t renew anymore because I found it difficult to go after work when I was already pretty tired, and then have to take the shuttle all the way back to Alabang after. I remember one time, I was already so tired by the time I got to yoga that I actually fell asleep during corpse pose. Dead to the world. And then, b y the time I got home, my energy level was usually way up from the workout so I found it really hard to sleep.

Here we are doing the Savasana Corpse Pose in class. And no, I didn’t fall asleep this time.

Every once in a while when I feel like it I put on a yoga video and practice at home. I’m never sure though if I’m doing it right, that’s why I was thankful for the instruction during our mommy session. Unfortunately, I arrived late and missed half of the class. It was a Saturday morning and we woke up late and, well, you know how I feel about crossing the highway, which I had to do that day. ECHOyoga Shala is located at the 3rd floor of Steps Dance Academy Building along Kalayaan Ave in Makati, behind Rockwell.

Steps building. The shala is on the third floor.

I learned from Marilen Elizalde, during our post-class lunch that parking can be a bit of a nightmare on weekends because of the volume of people coming in to the dance studio next door, but on weekdays this is not a problem. It’s a good thing I had the boys with me that day otherwise I would have missed the Gentle Flow session entirely just looking for a place to park.

On yoga and their new space, this is what the owners have to say

Marilen is one of the owners of ECHOyoga Shala, and the woman behind the amazing beautiful design of the place, together with  Jeannie Javelosa , who was our instructor that morning. These two ladies launched ECHOyoga five years ago as the wellness side of ECHOstore Sustainable Lifestyle, a green retail store. ECHO is actually an acronym that stands for Empowerment Care Health and Oneness.

Jeannie Javelosa

Launching ECHOyoga Shala in a new space is for me a natural extension and addition to support ECHOstore’s philosophy of a sustainable lifestyle. Yoga is my disciplined practice that wholistically connects the Body, Mind and Spirit. – Jeannie Javelosa

Marilen Elizalde

Yoga has always been my grounding that brings me to my center, especially with my life as a busy mother, homemaker and wife. Through teaching yoga, I expand my awareness and can share this beautiful practice with many. – Marilen Elizalde

This is ECHOyoga Shala

Inside the shala

I really enjoyed the class. I think that the calming ambiance of the shala really made a huge difference and Jeannie’s voice is so soothing! I was surprised to discover that I can still touch my toes and that there are still parts of my rusty body that are quite flexible, although I really am not as limber as I remember. It also helped that I was comfortable with the group I was with, and so I didn’t mind when my chunky parts went all salbabida on me. Like in this photo below.

There I am with my salbabida belly in white at the back, behind Ging who has no bilbil!

Jeannie told us after the class that they actually have a plus size teacher at the shala,  Vicky Ortega, who teaches Big Yoga. Now that’s a class I really want to try! It would be such a welcome change to have a teacher who understands how and why tummies and chests can get in the way of certain poses. I can just imagine how much more dynamic a class like that would be for me, although, I really don’t have any problems taking regular classes like this Gentle Flow one.

Foot reflexology area

Yes, they do foot reflexology too, and acupuncture and counseling. There also is a shower room at the shala, which Janice and I got to try because we had to run to another event afterwards. The shower rooms were spacious and private, and hat hot and cold running water. Winner!

Other services

ECHOyoga’s teaching philosophy

I’m sorry, I don’t know how to explain this, but I really think it’s important to share. So, I will lift from the PR that was given to us. Hehe. Disclaimer!

The Shala by ECHOyoga’s teaching philosophy is grounded on the Eight Limbs of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga that develop the inner change so outward action can manifest in a constructive and sustainable life lived with meaning.

We steady the foundation with

1) Ethical Disciplines (called YAMAS) non-violence, truth, non-stealing, continence, non-coveting

2) Individual disciplines (called NIYAMAS) (purity, contentment, austerity, study of Self, dedication to the Higher Forces.

We strengthen our physical body and mind through

3) Physical yoga practice (called ASANAS) These are beyond body gymnastics but are about postures that promote health and vitality

4) Breath control and manipulation (called PRANAYAMA) to bring “prana” or the life force to move freely through our central nervous system.

We train ourselves to live life deeper through

5) Awareness of senses and bringing them under control (called PRATYAHARA)

6.) Concentration (called DHARANA) and we can focus on a single task at hand

7) Meditation (called DYHANA), when the flow of concentration is uninterrupted

And we can see the direction of our lives with clarity

8) Enlightenment (called SAMADHI)

For information on classes and workshops, you can check out ECHOyoga shala’s   website . They’re also on   Facebook ,   Twitter   and   Instagram .

Thank you, ECHOyoga for this experience that reminded me of how much I enjoy yoga, and for inviting me to drag my lazy butt to your shala for a great sweat session. The ladies and I seriously have been talking about taking another class together at the shala. I really want to go back soon also, even on my own. I always feel amazing after a yoga class, and I welcome the sore muscles that come after because they remind me that these neglected body parts still exist and are still functioning.  Who wants to come to a class with me?

Calm

March 28, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 15 Comments

It’s a few minutes before bedtime, a time that is normally filled with noise and restless movement from my little boy. Instead, a strange calm has settled over our bedroom this evening. And you know what’s even more surprising? This boy is already in bed.

Shot with a Sony TX10 camera and post-processed on Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

With kids around, being unusually quiet is often a reason for either panic or worry. This time, though, I know exactly what is causing Little MrC to stay in bed without complaining. The friendly crew of Sky Cable finally came by at around dinner time to install a Digibox in our room. MrC and I decided that since it’s officially summer it would be nice to have a working TV again, and so we requested for cable service to be re-installed.

Right now, Beyblade is on, and I have already been informed that Dragon Ball Z is up next. Guess we already know who is in charge of the remote!

Recipe: Pork Chops!

March 27, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 41 Comments

Say it with me, people… Pork chops!!!

Obviously, I get excited over pork chops. So excited, actually, that I had some tonight. Eep, yes, I am ashamed to admit that I broke my  meatless Lenten promise. I feel regret in my guilty conscience, but my belly is quite happy. I promise to go back to regular pescatarian programming tomorrow, but first let me tell you about these fab chops.

First of all, I ended up cooking too many. That’s because mom said that my original plan to cook only the 1/4 kilo of butterfly pork chops I bought from the store wasn’t gonna be enough for dinner for everyone. So she threw in a few pieces of skinless pork chops, too. Then my dad and brother ended up not having dinner. And so we had a lot left over.

Pork Chops!!!

I, surprisingly, had the foresight to put away the cooked butterflied chops instead of serving them. So now I have enough for a meaty recycled and revamped dish for the boys’ lunch tomorrow. I will probably end up making a mushroom sauce and just throwing the chops in. Sounds like a plan.

So, back to the pork chops. First, we make seasoned salt. This is used to add flavor to the flour that we will use for dredging. I actually picked this up from The Pioneer Woman’s Pan-Fried Pork Chops recipe because it makes lots of sense. Flour alone would be dull and tasteless. Flour + seasoned salt, on the other hand, is just pure yum.

Make your own seasoned salt

Just combine 1/2 tbsp salt, 1/2 tsp sugar, and 1/8 tsp each of onion powder, garlic powder and paprika. That is all. I like to dump everything into a small food keeper, then seal and shake it violently for a few seconds. It’s easier than stirring in vain with a fork or teaspoon, plus, in case you make too much seasoned salt you don’t need to transfer it to a storage container. Less stuff to wash afterwards. When you’re done making this, set it aside for a while and proceed to rinse your meat.

Clean!

I rinse it to remove excess blood from the meat and to get rid of whatever sliminess there is on the surface. After rinsing, season each chop thoroughly with salt and pepper on both sides.

My seasoned chops, all in two rows

On a clean plate, mix together 1/2 cup of flour, 1 tsp black pepper and 1 tsp of your seasoned salt. Use a fork to swish everything together. Then, coat each pork chop generously with the flour mixture, shake off the excess and toss them into a pan with enough oil to cover the meat.

For dredging: Flour + seasoned salt + black pepper

Another tip I got from The Pioneer Woman is to add a tablespoon or two of butter into the oil for frying. It helps to achieve a nice golden brown color on the cooked chops. Wait, you didn’t think that this would be healthy, did you?

Side a.
This is the golden brown you are looking for.

You want to cook the meat for about 3-5 minutes on the first side, then flip. Cook for 2 more minutes or so on side b. I turn it a couple more times after that just to make sure that I’ve got the golden brown color that I want. Yup, I’m restless with my tongs!

Once the meat is cooked through, take each chop out and place on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb the excess oil.

Done!

That is it. I like these with rice and Mang Tomas All Around Sarsa, plus a little bit of chopsuey on the side. Yum. There you have it, the pork chops that made me break my meat-free Lenten promise. This was a hit with the boys and with lola, and I hope it will be a hit with your dinner crowd, too.

Really easy but really yummy fried pork chops.

Ingredients
  1. 1/2 kilo Skinless pork chops or butterflied pork chops
  2. 1/2 tablespoon Salt, plus extra for seasoning meat
  3. 1/2 teaspoon Sugar
  4. 1/8 teaspoon Onion powder
  5. 1/8 teaspoon Garlic powder
  6. 1/8 teaspoon Spanish paprika
  7. 1/2 cup All purpose flour
  8. 1 teaspoon Black pepper, plus extra for seasoning meat
  9. Cooking oil for frying
  10. 1 tablespoon Salted butter
Instructions
  1. Make the seasoned salt by combining 1 tablespoon of salt with the sugar, onion powder, garlic powder and paprika. Set aside.
  2. Rinse pork chops and pat dry with paper towels.
  3. Season both sides of the prepared pork chops with salt and pepper.
  4. Combine all purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of the seasoned salt mixture and 1 teaspoon of black pepper on a plate. Mix well using a fork.
  5. Heat enough cooking oil to cover the pieces of meat. Add a tablespoon of butter into the oil. Keep the stove on medium high.
  6. Dredge each chop with enough flour to form a thick, firm coating. Shake off the excess flour.
  7. Arrange the chops, three at a time, in the pan with hot oil. You may opt to cook more or less chops at a time, depending on the size of your pan.
  8. Cook the first side for about 3 to 5 minutes. Flip, and cook the second side for about 2 more minutes.
  9. You will know that the pork chops are done when there is no more blood or pink juice oozing out of the meat. You should also end up with a nice golden brown color once cooked.
Notes
  1. Remember to regulate the heat of your stove as needed. If the oil is too hot, the flour coating will burn before the pork is cooked through.

Parenting and the Art of Flexibility

March 26, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 9 Comments

Why is it that parenting is filled with so many “unexpecteds”? Please tell me that this isn’t just true for me. It just feels like life enjoys throwing curve balls so often at parents. Or maybe it just feels that way because we not only need to think of our own lives, needs and wants, but also those of our children and our spouses as well. Oh, and sometimes those of our parents, too, and even siblings for some. Am I right, or am I just ranting? Okay, this is coming from someplace, and it’s also going somewhere, don’t worry.

So finally, it’s the last week of school.

Time to celebrate, and be all merry and summery, right? Well, yes and no. See, after our super fun Saturday at The Mind Museum (which I was supposed to blog about yesterday), my kid woke up on Sunday with a fever. This is not unusual for Little MrC, who often gets sick for a couple of days after a full day of activity.

Mind Museum Saturday! Blogging about this soon!
Mind Museum Saturday! Blogging about this soon!

Thing is, Monday came and he was still feverish with bloodshot eyes and patches of rashes. By Tuesday morning, his fingers started to swell up. With the memory of our 2013 Easter “staycation” at St Luke’s still fresh in our minds, we decided to not take any chances and just go ahead and take him to the doctor already, especially since last year’s sickness also started with swollen fingers.

As seen on our pediatrician's office wall.
As seen on our pediatrician’s office wall.

The good news is that we are home and there was no need to be admitted. It also doesn’t look like it’s the same virus as before, but it is a virus nonetheless. The doctor requested for some tests, and I hope that we can find out tomorrow what the partial results are. Meanwhile, this little person is restless and hyper even though the virus comes with a low-grade fever that comes and goes. We were told that until the fever has been gone for at least 24 hours straight, there will be no going to school. Ah, but tomorrow is the last day of class, and the fever was still here today. So that means…

We need to take make up days some time next week.

Unexpected occurrence #1. That’s okay though, because I can take care of enrolling Little MrC for next school year while he’s taking his makeup days. Thing is, I’ve had him with me all week so far and he will be with me all the way until Friday (unexpected occurrence #2 and #3), which means I’ve been a little unproductive where work and blogging are concerned. Thank goodness I have nice, understanding, easy to talk to partners and clients. (Thanks, guys!)

Fortunately, the doctor said that as soon as the fever is gone, we can continue on with our normal activities. That means that soccer is a go for us beginning next Friday. There’s still one more test result that we need to wait for though, and that won’t be out until Thursday next week. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that there won’t be any more unexpecteds until then and afterwards. We’ll be going back to the pediatrician for a follow-up checkup on Tuesday, which means I need to cancel the plans that I previously made on that day. Oh well, needs vs wants. Mommy duties come first.

They needed four vials of blood for all the tests!
They needed four vials of blood for all the tests!

Since summer basically came early for us, I guess it’s time for me to activate my planned summer schedule and adjust already. I do need to get work done, after all. That’s the thing with parenting, I think. We need to be flexible. We need to learn to think on your feet and adjust on the fly. It’s not easy, but we just have to learn to go with it. Sometimes I think that maybe if I were a bit more organized, if I could actually be a step ahead of everyone else, or at least think that way, that things might be easier to manage. Then again, if I end up being a control freak, then the constant need for change would drive me nuts, too. It’s really not a matter of being one or the other then, more than it is learning how to dance to the beat. Ah, metaphors.

There are good unexpecteds, too.

Yes, there is a silver lining. There always is a silver lining. Today I got an invitation for the boys and I to share our story about a certain something. Yes, I know, that sentence was vague. Anyway, I love it because all three of us are involved, and it’s exciting, and it’s gonna be super fun. I can’t wait to tell you guys all about it, but that kwento is gonna have to wait until Saturday. I am also enjoying the time that the kiddo and I are getting to spend together now, since he’s on house arrest. I may not be getting work done, but that’s something I can make up for. I chose to work from home so that I can spend time with my kid, and that’s exactly what I’m getting, so yay.

Today, we made aliens for Ben10.
Today, we made aliens for Ben10.

Really though, in parenting and in life I guess it’s really our perspective that makes all the difference. And when it comes down to it, I would always much rather choose the sweet side. That’s why my Darna balls are Maltesers. Not just any bato, but chocolate bato! Sorry, that is an inside joke. I promise to tell you about it if we ever get to chat.

Have you been hit with unexpecteds lately? Are they good or bad? Oh and yes, I know that “unexpecteds” is not a word. Kthanksbye!

Would You Like To Go Clubbing With Me?

March 24, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 19 Comments

This year has me rekindling my love for books and reading. Kindle in hand, I am off to conquer my 2014 GoodReads challenge of reading 24 books this year. I’m off to a good start with four books down -Wicked in January, I Wish They Taught Money in Highschool and The Cuckoo’s Calling in February, and Fahreheit 451 in March. I’m also more than halfway done with The Lover’s Dictionary, and also with Losing It. The best part about reading, now, for me is my book club, as dorky as that may sound. It’s actually because of the book club that I’m getting to read all these different books.

The SBC and our BOMs

Is it just me, or am I sounding dorkier by the minute? SBC or Secret Book Club is, well, what our book club is called. Some friends of mine from high school started the club with a few other batch mates of theirs, and when I saw them talking about it on Twitter, I kinda invited myself to join. See, not only do I love to read, I like discussing the books I’m reading with other people too. MrC and I, for instance, can talk for hours about George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books. We also talked about The Hunger Games Trilogy and The Millennium Trilogy during and after reading all of the books. I’m lucky to have married someone who is the same brand of dork as I am.

Then came SBC, and all of a sudden I was surrounded by other ladies who are the same brand of dork as I am, too. I absolutely love it. We chat endlessly on WhatsApp about our current reads and what books to check out next, we swoon over book lists and hard bound editions, and a couple of us have already declared that we want George RR Martin to be our lolo. Sorry, SBC girls for calling you dorks, but, well…

Moving on. A BOM or Book of the Month is basically what the members of the club are required to read. For now, since we’re still a small group, we take turns suggesting new books. We’ve been assigning two books a month and we’ve been able to get by so far, which is perfect because that’s the same reading target I set for myself in GoodReads. I got to suggest a book for this April, and I’m a little ashamed to admit that I was the one who recommended Losing It. Haha! It was part of the reading list for the fiction writing class I joined earlier in the year, but I never got around to reading it. So I figured I’d suggest it as a BOM, and so far it’s gotten okay feedback from the others, so yay!

Happy hour book discussions (and gossip sessions)

We agreed to meet once a month in the Alabang area, since we are all from the south. Our first session happened earlier in March at Bugsy’s in Westgate. I actually didn’t plan on staying long, but believe it or not, Joei, Lar and I ended up hanging out until way past midnight.

The SBC: (Top) Iza, Me, (Front) Lar, Joei, Russ and (Not in photo) Balot.
Photo belongs to Joei. Click on it to read her post about SBC.

Lar and I are both mommies, and I think we enjoyed being among adults and talking about random things that evening. Joei is a lawyer and an amazing blogger. Her blog, Joei and Me is actually on the list of my favorite blogs from one of my Sunday Sevens. Russ is a marketing master, and one of my favorite writing clients of the moment (hehe, thanks, Russ). Iza is a coach at Futbol Funatics, where Little MrC is enrolled for the summer. Go check them out! Balot, who wasn’t able to join is that evening, blogs over at I Am Corporate Junkie.

Over the last couple of weeks, our group has grown and now includes my friendly friends and mom-bloggers, Michelle, Janice, Mille and Toni. My cousin Reena has also recently joined, as well as Joei’s friend, Koryn, and Iza’s friend, Yam. and So yes, we are very open to accepting new members, and if any of you would like to join the fun, send me a message on Facebook or email me at mrspcuyugan@gmail.com. We meet in the south, though, and of course we’d love to have you guys from the north come and visit our nice little neighborhood. Would you like to go clubbing with me?

I’m going back to reading now! What are you reading today?
