It’s My Birthday And I’ll Blog If I Want To

February 25, 2017 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 40 Comments

Another trip around the sun. And now I’m 34.

Hey guys, it’s been a while since I last posted. There is no real reason for my absence, just that I didn’t feel like writing at all these past few months. But, as always, the hiatus has proven to be good for me. Here I am, back again, with a million and one stories swimming in my head, just waiting to be shared.

I figured this would be the perfect day to start posting again, after all it is my day.

Birthday weekend coming up, which means πŸŽ‚πŸŽ‚πŸŽ‚!!! #alittlebitolderalittlebitwiser

I guess the best place to start would be to bring you all up to speed on where I’ve been and what I’ve been doing since my last entry in December.

Basically, I’ve been at home. The whole of 2016 I felt really compelled to work on making our house a real home, from establishing routines to making sure that everything we have in it are things that we use or really, really love. I’ve continued to feel this way well into the new year, and so that’s what I’ve been up to in these first few weeks of 2017, too.

mrspcuyuan christmas
Christmas 2016 in Alabang, Cainta and ParaΓ±aque!

Last year ended just the way I like it, surrounded by family and friends who truly matter. My MIL came home for the holidays last December, and it was the first time in 8 years that we got to spend Christmas with her. We also welcomed Little MrC’s first, first cousin on the Cuyugan side, baby Luna. And, of course, my loyal band of girlfriends were part of my holiday fun too, just has they’ve been for the last 20 years.

So far in 2017, we’ve had a wedding (which, sadly, the boys and I missed) and a baptism, welcomed home several balikbayans, and celebrated a few birthdays and ordinary days with countless food-filled family gatherings.

The kiddo will soon say goodbye to the fifth grade, and has a newfound obsession with growing his hair. I have come to terms that I will have a teenager soon. One who asks that I not write about him so much, and that I stop posting photos of him with funny Snapchat filters.

As a family, we’ve started cleaning out my Loli’s closets, which is a several-years-overdue project for the family. MrC and I have also been carefully removing things we no longer need from our house, and happily bringing in new things thanks to the generosity of our loved ones.

So here’s everything that we had to sort through today. And this is only part one. Lola ko hoarder na nung hindi pa uso ang #hoardersgonnahoard. πŸ˜‚ #KonMari #decluttering #cleanupcrew

I’ve been cooking a lot for my family, and the feedback has been amazing. I baked my first loaf of gluten-free bread, and learned how to make champorado from scratch. I’ve managed to overhaul our fridge and pantry quite a bit to make room for my kiddo’s gluten-free needs, and it’s been a good change for all of us over here.

I’m lucky to have a husband who supports my quirks and goes with the endless changes I try to make at home. Lately I’ve been obsessing over my kitchen, from wanting to lessen our use of plastic to trying to go paperless as much as we can. I have this newfound love for cloth napkins, and I’m happy to say that my collection is growing thanks to our Loli closet cleanup.

Last week during our cleaning session at my Lola’s house, my aunts gave me a pile of old cloth napkins that were super discolored and stained. I wasn’t sure if I could save them, but after a week-long soak in Oxiclean I got this first batch looking good again. Yay! I hope I get all of my rescued napkins looking nice and usable again coz they really are so pretty. 😊 I’ll let you guys know in a few days how it goes. πŸ˜‰ #clothnapkins #byebyepapernapkins #refusesingleuse #lesswaste #vintage #baulnilola

Life over here has been hectic but good. I’m happy to report that I didn’t go through my usual birthday blues this year, likely because I am exactly where I want to be in life right now. I’m loving every moment, from the quiet ones to the very loud ones. If only I could get myself motivated enough to write about them all. Right?

Hopefully, this is the start of that. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

So make me kwento, what’s been up with you guys so far this year? πŸ™‚

December Goals

December 1, 2016 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan Leave a Comment

Hello! After taking a long break from my computer screen, I’m back and ready to face the world again. Perfect timing, too, because December is here!

I dunno about you guys, but our family is super excited for the holidays. Our tree is up, the air is a little bit chillier (at least in the early morning), my mom just bought her first quezo de bola of the season, and my mom-in-law is all packed and ready to fly home for her first Manila Christmas since 2007. We definitely have a lot to look forward to, and a lot to be thankful for this year.

I loooove my Christmas tree this year!!! I’ve always wanted a handmade-themed tree, and while not all of my ornaments were made by hand, they all look the part. There are a few pieces in there that I made myself, plus some by crafty friends, too. ????β˜ƒ #handmadeholidays #handmadechristmas #letsbemakers #feltornaments #holidaysarecoming

I have a bunch of things that I want to accomplish for myself this month, too, the first of which is to actually list my goals.

Goal-setting isn’t something I’m accustomed to doing, and the last time I actually did this was at the start of 2016. But because I am forever dreaming of becoming more organized and learning to live more mindfully and intentionally, I figured that this might be the most logical first step. And, I’ve chosen to share my goals here on the blog as a way of cornering myself into really working towards achieving them. Makes sense, right?

So here we go, here’s my little list of December goals.

december
Isn’t my Christmas tree topper the cutest, ever?

Finish reading at least one book. I don’t know why, but I only finished reading six out of the many books I started this year. Right now, I’m somewhere in the middle of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which, surprisingly, I have never read before. I hope that I actually see this novel through til the end. If not, I really hope I can find one that I’ll read from cover to cover before 2016 is over.

Cut back on eating out. This is something that our household started doing in November, and I have to say that it’s been such a good change for us. We live just a few streets a way from a lot of yummy places to eat (I wrote about our foodie neighborhood a while back) and we really got carried away when we first moved. Now, after just a month of choosing to eat at home more often, we have been able to cut back on our expenses, and we generally feel healthier and happier. So yes, this goal is something that I am definitely carrying over into the new month.

Eat more veggies. In line with the eating-in goal, I’ve also started overhauling our meals to include more vegetables, upon the husbandry’s request. I’m lucky that I don’t have any picky eaters to feed, and so far my veggie dishes have been well-received. This is a real challenge for me, truth be told, because I grew up in a meat-loving home. Recipe suggestions would be greatly appreciated, guys!

Was craving for french fries but instead I decided to make adobong kangkong. Naks. Joke lang. The husbandry requested this, and I still want fries. ? #100homecookedmeals #noeatingout #healthiereats #itswhatsfordinner #filipinofoodmovement

Write a new blog post at least once a week. Ah, blogging, the one thing that I want to do regularly but never get around to actually doing. I feel like a post a week is more than manageable, though, so yes, this is officially one of my goals now. Again. Lol.

Figure out my blog newsletter. I have one, and it sucks. But that’s because I never really gave it much thought. Right now it’s really just a monthly roundup of posts from the blog. Or is it weekly? See, I don’t even remember. I know, though, that I can do so much more with that newsletter. I just need to figure out what I actually want it to do.

Share at least two recipes. I keep promising people recipe posts, and I never get around to writing them. I have been listing all my utangs, though, and as soon as I can take better food photos, I will really start sharing those recipes. Promise!

Attempt to make gluten-free bread. I have been wanting to do this for a while now, but because it’s so convenient to just order from Amores Gluten Free, I’ve been putting it off. I do think it’s time for me to start. I think I’m ready now.

Answer all of my pending emails, and clear out my inbox. Because there are just so many of them already.

Finish washing all of our laundry. Confession: You won’t see the mountain of laundry that I need to deal with inside my house because it is hidden away in my car. Thing is, I need to get the car cleared out before it’s time to get my my MIL from the airport, otherwise there won’t be any space for her bags. Should I start panicking now?

Create one of those “Two Seconds Everyday” videos. I’ve seen a bunch of my friends do this on Facebook, and they got the idea from the movie Chef. It’s a great way to capture memories! You basically take two seconds of video footage each day and edit them together into a monthly roundup video kind of thing. Does this make sense? Haha! If you don’t get what I mean, wait for my video at the end of the month. Time to whip out my hidden-away Comm Arts skills!

There you go, 10 goals for December. I’m pretty excited to start working on them. Maybe even as excited as I am for Christmas.

So tell me… Do you guys do any goal-setting? Is this something you do monthly, too, or maybe yearly? Weekly? Any tips for greater success? πŸ™‚

An Incident Outside School

October 20, 2016 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 7 Comments

School drop-off and pick-up can be a real pain in the butt. Us moms and dads who do it every day know this already. This being the case, it’s not usual to see drivers lose their cool. I’ve seen honkers and overly-aggressive drivers, drivers who cut in front of others, and also the occasional “roll down the window and scream at the other car” type of angry driver.

Yesterday, though, I witnessed an incident that I feel was a little extreme. I saw two drivers lose their cool so bad that they started to punch each other out on the street outside my son’s school. In front of everyone. In front of kids. And I mean little kids. Remember, I pick up my son from the grade school area.

mrspcuyugan
It’s not unusual for us to have to crawl through this kind of traffic outside school. Alam na natin to.

Here’s the story. The driver of Car A (car in front) was a heavy-on-the-brakes kind of driver. Maybe he was doing it on purpose. Maybe he was texting or distracted. Maybe he really just isn’t the best driver. Whatever it is, the driver behind him (let’s call him Car B) was annoyed by Car A’s driving. I could tell by his constant honking. They were on the lane to my left.

Car B guy was obviously in a hurry because he kept trying to accelerate quickly. Then, he’d be forced to brake hard whenever Car A would stop, which happened often. The road was pretty packed, and movement was slow. You know what it’s like at dismissal time.

Eventually Car B guy’s patience wore off. He got out of his car, angrily approached Car A (as in sugod levels ha), and started pointing, screaming, and hitting Car A’s window. Car B guy called out to the traffic guards, saying loudly that the driver in Car A was (insert a bunch of insults and curse words here.)

Mature. Very mature. Remember, there were kids in the area. Gosh. Me flipping out is not something I would want my kid, or any kid, to see. Not at all.

Eventually, Car A guy lost his cool, too, and stepped out of his car. That’s when they started to punch each other out. Two guards came over and pulled them apart.

At this point, Little MrC had exited school, and gotten into our car. He saw the fight from the sidewalk and asked me what happened. So I explained. I told him that the two drivers lost their cool, and decided to act on it in a not-so-smart manner.

You guys should have seen the faces of the kids standing on the sidewalk. Some of them looked scared. This was the perfect way to set a bad example.

mrspcuyugan
You know traffic is bad when you have time to take a selfie. But I don’t do this anymore. I realized it sets a bad example. Right?

Wala lang, I’m just pretty bothered by what I saw, and I’m a little upset that my son had to see that, too. It’s a good thing that he’s old enough to understand what happened and why, and to know that it’s not right. But to be honest, he isn’t over what he saw. He brought it up again at breakfast today. He’s still bothered. That’s not a good thing.

Sigh. A little extra patience can really go a long way. Sana nalang people on the road remember this. Yes, the traffic problem we face daily is awful, but still. It’s no reason to let go of decency, respect for others, common courtesy, and poise.

As parents, we always need to be aware that our kids learn from the things we do. Sure, we can’t all be perfect role models all the time, but we also need to keep ourselves in check. Ultimately, we are the adults and we are supposed to know better. That is all.

Ch-ch-changes

September 6, 2016 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 2 Comments

Some days, I wonder if anyone still reads my blog. I know I don’t write as  regularly as I used to, so, realistically, I imagine I’ve lost quite a few readers. Ganun talaga, right? Why should I expect anyone to visit my site when even I don’t log on so much?

Something has to change. And it’s a good time for change because my blog turns 5 years old this month. Woohoo to half a decade of existing on this space.

Page Not Found
In the beginning, there was this.

I know for sure that I’m not the same person, nor the same blogger that I was when I started writing here. My lifestyle has changed so much, and with it, my interests, too. Five years ago, I was newly married, and had just quit life as a corporate slave. When I started this blog, being a wife and hands-on mom was all so new to me, and now I can no longer imagine life as anything else.

For someone who works in events, I learned three years ago that I'm pretty clueless when it comes to DIY birthday parties. These cupcakes were my saving grace.
I learned three years ago that, for someone who worked in events, I’m pretty clueless when it comes to DIY birthday parties. These cupcakes were my saving grace. And I didn’t even make them!

The themes and topics of my posts have evolved, too, over the years. I have gone from writing about blogging and working at home to learning how to make baon  everyday while still maintaining my sanity. There were a lot of reviews, food and restaurant posts, events, staycations, and the occasional giveaway. And then my posts became about moving out and nesting in my own space, caring for my family, and thriving as a homemaker.

It's been a little over a year since we moved in, and I can definitely say that this is my most used space at home. My kitchen. This is where the magic happens. It's often very messy, and there are still so many changes I want to make. More shelves, more counter space, a bigger fridge… The list goes on. But really, right now I just feel so fortunate to have a kusina of my own. Best gift ever talaga, @polcuyugs. ?? #homesweethome

As I read through my archives, I can clearly see that I’ve succeeded in turning this space into a time capsule of the amazing and also the challenging moments of the last 5 years. And now it’s time to move on.

No, I’m not quitting this blog. Just making some changes.

First, I think I’m gonna stop posting meal plans. Obviously, I can’t get myself to share those regularly, and the desire to do so just gives me unnecessary, self-imposed stress. Lol. I tried. Instead, I will focus on sharing more recipes, especially those that I’ve been trying out for my #100homecookedmeals and #theglutenfreeproject experiments.

I also plan on writing more about are my little home decorating attempts, and the fun DIY projects that the boys and take on. I hope to share more of my journey towards becoming a true domestic goddess / marvelous homemaker, too, because that’s my life now and I love it.

I want to cut back on restaurant reviews, so unless a place really made me say ohmygoshbestfoodeverguys, chances are I won’t be writing about it. Same goes for product reviews. After all, why would I waste my time and brain cells posting about something that I don’t absolutely love?

Yup, there's only room in here for stuff I actually love. Like these guys!
Yup, there’s only room in here for stuff I actually love. Like these guys!

So basically this blog, my blog, will be more of a reflection of life as I live it, than anything else. It’s gonna be me giving you the chance to spend time at home with me, MrsC, (see what I did there?) from wherever it is that you may be reading from. And who knows, someday, you may just find yourself sitting with me in my living room for real. What an exciting thought!

The Breakup

July 24, 2016 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 7 Comments

I can’t believe that this is happening.

Because of certain, unforeseen issues that have been springing up, I find myself having to make a conscious effort to break up with one of the greatest loves of my life – bread.

Lol. Ang drama diba? But seriously, my life and pantry are in for a big change.

Our family doctor (aka my dad) advised us to try shifting to a gluten free diet, in the hopes that this will help cure Little MrC’s never-ending rashes. Because the seasons are changing again, rash-y days are here for us both, and it’s as ugly as it is uncomfortable.

I grew up dealing with the same skin issues that my kid is going through now, so I know how hard it is not to scratch all the itchy bits. Scratching makes things worse, though, obviously. So it’s really a struggle. For a while, when I was younger, I became dependent on my steroid ointment, and I really don’t want the kiddo to end up the same way. It’s both bad for you and expensive in the long run kasi.

Rice Flour
Thank God for rice flour. Got this bag at Brie’s Baking Needs in Las PiΓ±as.

So, our best bet right now is this diet shift. We are going gluten free (GF). It’s worth a try. Plus, abstaining from gluten is supposed to help with other things, too, like bloating, migraines and low energy levels, so this sounds like a good change to make.

Honestly though, I don’t see us making a 100%, no turning back transition, for practical reasons. But I will do as much as I can to limit gluten in our meals from now on. Starting with bread.

Oh, my bread and pastry-loving heart. Breakfast buffets are never gonna be the same. But, on the upside, because I bake, I hope to eventually make GF bread myself at home. Super huge challenge, I know, but I’m up for it. Also, in a few weeks, I feel like I’ll be able to call myself a puto-making expert. Lol.

First attempt at making puto at home. Not bad for a beginner. Super yummy, but they’re a little dense in the middle. Maybe I need to make them smaller, and reduce the steaming time? Can anyone share tips? Or a good recipe? The one I used is from Kawaling Pinoy. #theglutenfreeproject

A photo posted by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan (@mrspcuyugan) on Jul 27, 2016 at 7:21pm PDT

I’m still a little clueless as to how this is gonna go, so I’m holding off on posting any meal plans until I have things figured out. It is daunting, but I’m lucky that I have friends who already are gluten free, and are super willing to answer my questions. There also are countless resources online for recipes, hacks, tips and tricks. Thank God for the interwebs.

It’s gonna be worth it. It’s gonna be worth it. It’s gonna be worth it. Yes, I still have to keep reminding myself, because a life without cake, ensaymadas, doughnuts and sandwich bread is my idea of a sad life. But hey, if it’s for the good of the kiddo, I’m all-in. Isipin ko nalang, the results could make me far happier than bread has ever had. Right?

Wish me luck, guys. And follow along on our gluten free journey! I’ll be using the hashtag #theglutenfreeproject on IG.

Anyone out there living a gluten free life? Please send me links to your favorite GF websites and social media accounts so I can follow them!

You Let Me Down Today, Uber.

July 21, 2016 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan Leave a Comment

Warning: This is a ranty, nega post. I don’t do this often, but today calls for one.

I had my worst Uber experience ever this morning. Now, I take Uber all the time, and sure, there have been unpleasant rides. But this one takes the cake.

The problem is this driver. As far as I’m concerned he is not qualified to drive people around. Why? Oh, for all of these reasons.

  1. I had to wait for him for an hour. Sure, traffic was bad where he came from (which was only 20 minutes away, by the way,) but I know for a fact that wasn’t the only reason why it took so long for him to get to me. Read on, and you’ll see what I mean.
  2. His phone couldn’t be reached. Whenever I book a car, the first thing I do is text the driver my exact pickup address. Spares us both a lot of trouble. But he never got my address because his phone was dead. I knew this because I tried calling him several times.
  3. And then he spent 20 minutes at our village gate. Obviously they wouldn’t let him in unless he told them where he was going. Obviously. But he didn’t know where to go because he never got my message. So how did he get in? I noticed that his car was stopped on the same spot on the map for a really long time. I figured out that he was stuck at the guardhouse. So I called them, asked a guard to find my Uber, give him my address, and send him my way. Finally. Or so I thought.
  4. He went to the wrong house. At this point, I already knew that this driver wasn’t the greatest. So I decided to wait for him outside. He never arrived. I looked down the street and saw the car I was waiting for several houses down. I tried calling again but his phone was still dead. So I walked to him. It’s a good thing I got there before he rang my neighbor’s doorbell.
  5. He used my most hated “I’m new” excuse. Ok fine, it was his first ever trip on his first ever day but that doesn’t give him the license to be unprepared. Or unreachable, for that matter. Rookies are expected to perform well too, right?
  6. He was so dependent on Waze, but really couldn’t follow the map. At one point during the ride, this driver positioned the car to make a u-turn instead of go straight towards our exit. I told him that a u-turn would take us right back to where we started. He said that Waze was making him turn. Honestly, it wasn’t. It’s a good thing I was paying attention.
  7. Halfway through the trip, he forgot where we were going. True story. He asked me where we were headed. He couldn’t remember. Good Lord.
  8. His driving was comparable to a swerving, heavy-on-the-gas, heavy-on-the-brakes cab driver. Thank God I don’t get carsick easily.

Unfortunately for me, our car is coded today so I really had no choice but to sit there and suck it up. I was hungry, irritated, and very late for work.

Sigh. You let me down today, Uber. I’m a loyal customer, but if you keep hiring drivers like this guy, our relationship might just turn sour real quick. Too bad, coz I think Uber is a great service. Don’t let those bad drivers bring you down.

Side note – I’m loving the WordPress app for iPhone. Yay for blogging on the go. Now to figure out how to properly add photos from this thing. Lol, low tech problems.
