Enveloped Ideas

February 15, 2016 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 18 Comments

Fact: Enveloped Ideas is a song by Filipino band, The Dawn.

It has nothing to do with this blog post.

I will be talking about ideas, though, and how I’m often at a loss for them when it’s time to start writing.

It seems like every time I’m not in front of the computer, I know exactly what I want to write and blog about. Then I sit down, and everything just disappears into a mushy pool of random thoughts. It’s my sad but true reality.

Well, recently I’ve gotten the chance to work with a (really) young director who gave me the brilliant idea of idea-banking. No, it isn’t a new concept, but there’s just something more appealing about having something enthusiastically explained to you versus reading about it online.

Notebook, check! Pens, check! All that’s missing now are ideas.

At our last shoot, he showed me a small notebook that he started carrying around in his back pocket. It contains his random thoughts and ideas – anything and everything that might be interesting to write about, photograph, shoot, or think about. His goal is to write down 10 ideas a day. It’s basically bottled up brainfarts, or, enveloped ideas! Lol. I just had to…

I always have ideas bouncing around in my head, but I’ve never really thought to list them. Why not? I dunno, but now I think I should have started this a long time ago. I feel like it’s a great habit to develop, especially for someone like me who needs to have an active idea bank for work (and for the sake of this blog, too.)

I’m starting today. My colorful pens and little yellow notebook are ready. I hope my brain is ready, too. It’ll be fun creating my own writing prompts, and going over my list of random thoughts on writing days. I hope this means that more interesting and exciting blogging times are coming up, too.

Do you guys keep a list of blog topics and ideas that you want to write about or do you just wing it like I’ve always done? Do you agree that keeping a list of ideas can help us defeat the dreaded blank page?

What do you want to be when you grow up?

October 10, 2015 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 8 Comments

Question: When you were young, how often would you get asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

I noticed recently that Little MrC would get asked that question a lot. I think it could be because he is getting older. When he was younger he said that he wanted to become a fire fighter. Now he says he wants to teach.

When I was a kid, I’d get asked that quite often, too. I recently had a conversation about my childhood ambitions with my mom and cousin, and they reminded me about some funny things I said I wanted to become when I was a little girl.

I think that my earliest answer was that I wanted to be Little Miss Philippines. Like Aiza Seguerra. No kidding. That was in 1987 (yes, I Googled it,) which would have made me 4 years old at the time.

This little baby wanted to become a kiddie pageant queen!

Honestly, I completely forgot about this until my mom brought it up. Looking back, I remember practicing my introduction using our bedroom doorknob as my microphone. I never joined Little Miss Philippines (thank goodness!) and I eventually stopped watching noon time shows. And with that, the dream thankfully died.

My cousin says that she remembers me saying that I wanted to become a Ginebra Super Angel like my mom. I’m not sure how to explain what the Super Angels were, but they were sort of a girl group that performed during Ginebra events, and on TV to promote the brand and the basketball team. You had to be able to sing and dance to join, and from my mom’s old photos I could see that they were all tall, slim and pretty.

I don’t remember actually saying that I wanted to be a Super Angel, but I remember wanting to be a dancer like my mom. After her stint with Ginebra, she worked for a while as a VIP dancer in Vilma Santos’ Vilma In Person TV show. Alas, I eventually learned that I have really bad stage fright, so that dream died, too.

Yes, I once was some sort of pompom girl. I think that I was in the fourth grade in this picture.

When I was eight years old I fell in love with Sweet Valley Kids, and that was the moment that I decided I wanted to become I writer. I went on to read Sweet Valley Twins, High and University, Sweet Dreams, and Love Stories, as well as classics like Little Women and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

I grew up loving books, and writing letters and journal entries. I would exchange short stories with friends. Writing was something that came naturally to me. I knew that I had found an ambition that could actually work for me. So far, it has been working out well.

Truth: I still dream of writing fiction someday. I don’t know if I’m ready for it yet because, to me, writing fiction feels like baring your soul, except that you are using made up characters and scenarios. Then again, I guess all forms of writing requires some sort of soul-baring. Right?

I’m not giving up on that dream just yet. If someday I do complete a book, you guys buy it okay?

What did you want to be when you grew up? Is that what you are now?

A is for Ambitious

January 24, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 25 Comments

I literally just glanced at the calendar and realized that in about a week, it will be February. Wow. Didn’t it feel like January just whizzed by so quickly? My days have been super full, and I guess that’s why time seems to have flown by so fast. Between taking care of the kiddo, spending as much time as I can with MrC while he’s home, my WAHM projects, and all the other things I’ve decided to take on, my plate is really quite full. In a good way, of course.

My Relationship with Longganisa (Or Finding My Writing Triggers)

August 26, 2013 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 11 Comments

After typing the title for this post, I realized that it kinda sounds like the title of an x-rated film. Lol.

At last Saturday’s Write On Workshop, one of the topics was time management and finding time to write for your blog. Martine said that one of the ways we can keep our writing momentum going is to write while an idea or inspiration is hot. During the discussion, I got to thinking about my writing triggers, or what usually gets my creative juices flowing. I came to the surprising realization that some of my best ideas for posts (or scripts, articles and other stuff I need to write) have come to me while I was cooking longganisa. I kid you not. A couple of weeks ago, I actually composed an entire pitch for a blog post series that I want to do on my BlackBerry while cooking longganisa at dawn. Talk about striking while it’s literally hot!

I also get really good ideas while in the bathroom taking a shower, brushing my teeth, or doing other stuff that I’m sure you guys do in the bathroom too. Ever since I was in school, bathroom breaks were great thinking opportunities for me. In fact, when I was still working and someone would ask me for my inputs on things, I would think a little, go to the bathroom to pee, and come back with so many different ideas. Too much info, but totally true. These bathroom ideas though aren’t as good as the ones that I get while cooking, and really, the best ones happen when I’ve got longganisa in the pan.

It sounds weird, but it really works (for me, at least). And yes, I cook longganisa that often haha. My family loves sausage in general, and when we feel like having Pinoy food for breakfast, it usually involves a silog of some sort. Most of the time it’s longsilog. Not very good for the waistline, I know, but great for work! Here’s proof: I thought up this post while reheating some leftover longganisa for brunch this morning. True story!

How about you? What are your writing triggers? 🙂

P.S. I actually tried to make my own longganisa once, using a recipe I found online. It came out really yummy! The link to the original recipe can be found in this blog post. 🙂
