Transportation

March 7, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 15 Comments

My daddy collects motorcycles. He loves riding them too, mind you. I think this is a passion that he got from his dad, although I can’t say for sure. All I know is that ever since I was little, there always was a motorbike in our garage. Over time, my dad’s collection just grew, and he now has over a dozen of these 2-wheeled machines parked at home. He likes the big-engine bikes, not those racing motorcycles or the low-cc ones. His are vintage BMW’s and other large ones that I won’t even try to talk about coz I know I’m gonna totally sound like a girl.

I remember there was this one time when my guy office mates came over just so they could take a look at the stuff in our garage. I don’t really understand bikes, but I know that dad’s collection is a pretty good one. Sorry, though, but I didn’t take a photo of any of his motorcycles for this post. I am sharing a picture of a pretty impressive motorbike though, one that was made out of forks and spoons.

Shot with a Sony TX10 camera and post-processed on Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

Okay, I don’t think I did a very good job with this photo because I couldn’t get the angle right. I really didn’t want to sit on the floor outside, and it was just too dark inside the house to take the photo there. I also used a point and shoot, that’s why my focal point is kinda iffy. And, as you can see, I didn’t bother to dust the figurine. Hahaha! Oh well. I hope you get it though. Like I mentioned, this is a motorcycle made out of spoons and forks, and it was given to my dad by the son of our cleaning lady. Galing no? We have three of these at home, and I hear that the guy has made all sorts of metal sculptures in various designs out of utensils. Amazing.

Know what else is amazing? The fact that I’ve so far been able to post on time for this photo-a-week challenge. All but once, I think. And I’m sticking to it, too! It’s lots of fun for me because I get to do it with other mom bloggers, and I get excited over what they post each week. So, at least for this blog challenge, I’m not an incomplete blogger anymore. Yay!

The Lazada Ultimate Gadget Craze Is On! Can Someone Please Feed My Tech Envy?

March 4, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 6 Comments

I have this really bad, insatiable tech envy. I have a constant desire to upgrade my gadgets and devices, and whenever I see friends or family members with new toys, I really do get jealous. It’s a mildly dangerous and really expensive personal issue, but there have been times when I got lucky with promotions and discounts, and that made things kinda better. Kinda.

Thing is, over the past few weeks I’ve been ranting about how the phone I’m using for Instagram, a hand-me-down Samsung Galaxy Y (or Galaxy Why, as MrC calls it), is slowly but surely dying. Grrr. It’s so frustrating because my main phone is actually a BlackBerry, and well, there’s no Instagram for BlackBerry, as you know. So I’ve been making do with the dying phone. Can’t complain since I got it for free, technically, but well, it wouldn’t hurt if it had a better camera right? And, of course, if it wasn’t on the brink of conking out.

I know that a new phone shouldn’t be a priority for me right now. It’s one of those needs vs wants things. And then, just when I was starting to feel hopeless, I saw this.

Samsung Sale!
The Great Samsung Sale!

Now the question is, do I go for it? I honestly don’t know yet. But if any of you have been eyeing a nice new gadget, you may want to check out Lazada’s Ultimate Gadget Craze. My Current Favorite Blogs To Read

March 2, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 23 Comments

I blog-hop a lot. Ever since I started actively blogging myself, my love for reading blogs has grown steadily. While I love discovering new blogs to read, I do have my list of faves. These are the ones I go to regularly to check if there are any new posts. I comment as often as I can, but sometimes it can be fun to also just lurk and read. Haha. So anyway, here are my seven current fave blog-hop stops, in no particular order.

1. Joei and Me

Joei and I have been blogging friends since college I think. We’re also friends in real life, and that makes things more fun. She and I share a common love for food and for kaartehan. Whenever I am in search of new places to try, or if I want to know if a particular restaurant is good,I check out Joei’s blog. Joei and Me is the only one on my list that is not a mom blog.

2. Roller Coaster Ride

Janice is one of my first mom blogger friends. She is also one of my first WAHM friends. She and I chat like we’ve been friends for ages, when in reality we’ve only known each other for a little over a year. That for me is the stuff great friendships are made of – an instant connection that grows stronger as you learn more about the other person. I love reading her blog because the little bits and pieces of her life as a mom and a super woman totally fascinate me. I love how updated we are with each others’ lives, just like sisters, and our blogs play a big role in our being connected with each other.

3. Make It Blissful

Make it Blissful (formerly Dainty Mom) and Martine are important to me because this was the blog that unknowingly empowered me to take the plunge and become a WAHM. This blog for me is so real and so relateable, that it makes you want to go and do what you love, find your bliss, and chase your dreams. There’s an aspirational aspect to it, too. You see nice things, clean and well-designed spaces, ideas for better living, and you take those things and know that you want them for yourself so much that you go and get them. That’s why I love this site.

Coz I’m boring like that.

4. She Said, she said

I’m pretty sure I met Cyn at a blogging workshop last year. Maybe it was Blog Inspired? Anyway, I love reading the mom and daughter adventures that she and her daughter post on this blog. It reminds me a lot of the time I would spend with my mom when I was a teenager, and until today, actually. There’s so much heart in this blog, and I think that’s why I like it. You get such a happy and inspiring vibe from the entries, and you can see how both women in this mom-daughter tandem are really making an effort to live their lives to the fullest.

5. Wifely Steps

I don’t just love this blog. I love the blogger. Toni, I labyu! She likes books and video games. She’s quirky. She’s motherly. She admits that she’s not perfect, and yet she strives to be all that she can be amid the imperfection. She’s also really pretty hahaha. I met her at Blog Inspired when I was just a newbie mom blogger, and she really inspired me so much. It’s blogs like Wifely Steps that make me want to be a better blogger.

6. Momma N Manila

Mish is my idol. Seriously! When I first met her, I thought she looked so young and fresh and pretty. I was surprised to learn that she had 4 kids. She certainly doesn’t look it. She’s a great writer too, something that I aspire to be. She cooks and bakes, she crafts, she teaches yoga and is super fit. Yes, I sound like I’m fan-girling, but she’s actually my friend and we’re practically neighbors. She has an amazing little girl, Gelli who’s so much fun to be around. I ate cookies with her once, and we had fun, that little girl and I. I’ve learned a lot from Mish in the short time that I’ve known her, lots of lessons on being a mom and being a blogger, and little life tidbits, too.

7. The Happy WAHM.

If I could make one blog-related wish, it would be for Marge to write more often. Bow. She has an amazing talent for storytelling that I believe she should share with all of us. Pressure much? Haha!

So there you go, I hope you guys can check out these fab blogs too. And please share your favorite online reads in the comments. Include your own links, too, okay? Like I said, I’m always on the lookout for new blogs to read.

Texture

February 28, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 17 Comments

Ladies and gents, meet my Abby Jocson bag. I’ve been using this since the end of last year, and I don’t want to have to change it anytime soon. This was given to me as a Christmas present by my sister-in-law. I love the size, the shape, the detachable shoulder strap, the inside and outside pockets – everything about it, basically! What I love the most about this bag though is it’s color and texture. I could have chosen any other style and design, but this was really what I wanted.

Shot with a Sony TX10 camera
Post-processed on Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3

I definitely did better on the photo challenge this week, at least as far as photo subject is concerned. Unfortunately I’m back to using the Sony TX10 coz my dad still has the SLR. Toinks!

This Is Why Customer Service Is Important

February 6, 2014 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 10 Comments

Let me begin by telling you that I had a different post queued for today. I was supposed to publish the second half of our Las Casas vacation, a post that took me the entire morning to complete because of all the photos that I edited for it. But then, something happened at around lunch time when I went to the South Supermarket branch of LBC here in Alabang, and I just can’t let it go, so I thought I’d write about it.

The back story

I joined an exchange gift activity with my fellow World Moms Blog mamas for Valentine’s Day. I had the perfect gift already, and all that was left to do was to ship the gift to the recipient. Now, I’ve never sent anything overseas via registered mail or courier before, so I wanted to know what my options were. I was panicking a little because the target arrival of the gift is supposed to be on February 14, and I was starting to worry that I wouldn’t make it.

First stop was the post office, and I was surprised that the rate was a lot more than I’d expected. I had a feeling that DHL and FedEx would be even more expensive, but I inquired anyway by phone. My mom suggested I try LBC, so I gave them a call to ask if they ship to the country where my package is supposed to go. The lady who took my call said that yes, they could ship my item, but that I needed to go to an LBC center to get a cost estimate. So off I went to South Supermarket after the call.

Here’s the story about what happened this afternoon

I parked, got out of the car with my gift and walked into LBC. The guy at the counter was on the phone, and I assumed that he was taking an inquiry so I busied myself by reading the posters and signs stuck to their wall. After a few minutes, he asked me what it was that I needed. Seconds after I started to explain myself, he started talking again to the person on the phone, so I stopped speaking and waited. That was rude moment #1.

This guy finally hung up and looked at me, and asked again what I wanted. I told him that I wanted to ship my present overseas, and to which country it was going. He told me he couldn’t ship my item because “items like that were not allowed to be delivered overseas via courier.” I asked why not. He said that it’s regulation. I told him that I had just spoken with someone over the phone who said they could ship it. And then he asked me: “Saan po kayo tumawag?” (Where did you call to inquire?”) Rude moment #2.

Of course I told him that I had called their customer service hotline. Hello? What else could I have been referring to???

So he then said that he needed to double check with DHL, who is their shipping partner. I waited while he made the call, and after hanging up he tells me that, yes, they can ship it after all. Then he says that I need to present an invoice for the item I was sending out. Well, I didn’t have one because it was purchased from the province a while back. Then the conversation started to get really s**p*d.

Me: (In Tagalog, of course,  but I’m writing it out in English) I really don’t have an invoice. Is there something else I can do?

Him: No.

Me: What do I need an invoice for anyway?

Him: As an attachment.

Me: For what?

Him: The package.

Me: Why?

Him: It’s a requirement.

Me: Why?

Him: That’s what DHL said.

Me: Why?

Him: Ganun po talaga (That’s how it is)

Rude moment #3.

I stood there with my right eyebrow raised and my mouth open. I stopped speaking because I realized that he didn’t know the answer to my question. Just as I was about to turn and leave, his co-worker who was sitting next to him the whole time said, and this is verbatim, “Try no po sa FedEx. Baka tanggapin nila doon kahit walang invoice. Sa DHL kasi hindi pwede.” (“Try going to FedEx, they might be able to ship it without an invoice. DHL won’t.”)

Funny how LBC, whose partner is DHL, asked me to go to FedEx, who, if I’m not mistaken, is a competitor. Please correct me if I am wrong. Maybe she was just trying to be helpful, but… Oh well.

And then came a second rejection, but I didn’t mind

I said thank you, left the store and went to FedEx. When I arrived, the ladies manning the counter were having lunch. I apologized and asked if they could just quickly answer my inquiry. They entertained me without complaining. Customer service win #1.

I expained what had happened with LBC/DHL, and the woman I was speaking to told me that they would also require an invoice. Again I asked why.

She patiently explained to me that it was required by customs, and that their people on the receiving end would need it to support my declaration of what the item was, what it was made of, where it came from, and the actual value. Customer service win #2.

She said that, unfortunately, they couldn’t ship it without an invoice either. I told her that I appreciated her taking the time to explain to me why not. And honestly, I wasn’t upset over being turned down this second time because I knew why they had to say no to me. LBC on the other hand, said no without a proper explanation. Sure, it’s because of a requirement of DHL, but if the person from LBC did not understand what that requirement was for then maybe he could have called to ask. After all, he was just chatting on the phone when I arrived. I don’t think he has a problem making calls.

I doubt that I will be using LBC anytime soon, especially not that branch. There’s a JRS next to them, and the people there are cheerful and accommodating. There is also the ever-reliable Xend, who conveniently picks up my packages for shipping from my house.

I wonder who owns that LBC branch, and if this person invested in training for the branch personnel. Because it doesn’t seem like he/she did.

To further emphasize the horrible service of LBC South Supermarket Alabang, I had a super pleasant experience at the post office when I finally had my gift shipped out this afternoon. The process was quick and easy, the ladies there were so helpful, and they didn’t mind answering my questions then I told them that it was the first time I was doing this. They recommended express shipping, since I was on a deadline, and explained the difference between regular and express, as well as the cost breakdown for both. They helped me seal my box, and gave me tips for when I have packages sent to me via registered mail. They then sent me off with a round of thank you’s. Customer service win, post office ladies!

I am now just glad that this is over, and that my gift is on it’s way and should arrive at it’s destination on time. I thought the postal service would give me a headache, but I was totally wrong about that. Sorry LBC, but I don’t like you right now.
