Sneaking In A Quick One

July 13, 2012 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan Leave a Comment

So I haven’t been blogging as much as I want to, or as much as I thought I would, whichever is greater. I totally underestimated how much time and effort really goes into managing a household and taking care of a family. By next Saturday I will officially hit the two-month mark of my being stay-at-home/work-at-home. Right now I can say there’s been less working and more staying at home, but that doesn’t mean that I just sit around and watch HBO all day. Honestly, cleaning our room, sorting the laundry, grocery shopping, cooking, tutoring, and caring for our son has been keeping me on my toes a lot! The good news is I’ve lost a little bit of weight since I started doing this.

So now that I’ve sort of gotten a hang of how things work day by day, both on school days and weekends, I think I should make an effort to squeeze some writing into my schedule. I really ought to keep blogging so I at least don’t get all rusty. Plus of course, I should start looking for more projects. As in actively looking. I used to do all these at night after the little guy goes to bed, but these past weeks I’m pooped by 6pm. So when 9pm rolls around all I want to do is curl up in bed with my Kindle and immerse myself in whatever book I’m currently reading. The good news is I’ve already been able to read eight books since I stopped working.

Ok, that’s about it for my Friday morning rant. The good news is that it’s finally Friday.

It’s such a happy thought knowing that there is always good news, as you can see at the end of each of my paragraphs. I hope this makes as much sense to you as it does to me.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Off The Top Of My Head

June 20, 2012 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan Leave a Comment

I was listening to the radio in the car just a few minutes ago. I was tuned in to Jam88.3, and a female DJ was talking about Yoko Ono’s latest art exhibit in London. She was describing how weird the pieces were. She basically implied in her comments that the exhibit was weird, and that it’s a sad thing that many “real” artists don’t get the chance to have their works displayed, while Yoko Ono has endless opportunities to showcase her weird pieces.

I was so bothered by her words that as soon as I got home, I got on my computer, researched on the exhibit, and posted about it on my Facebook wall. Obviously I’m still not over it, because here I am blogging about the issue.

I completely agree that it’s a sad thing that many artists never get the chance to have their works exhibited. I’m sure that Yoko Ono’s celebrity status certainly gives her advantage, and it could be a big factor as to why she gets to put up these art shows. However, I feel that it is not right for the DJ to imply that Yoko Ono is not a “real” artist, simply because her pieces are weird, or too simple, or basically out of the ordinary.

I don’t want to bother finding out who the DJ was, but I just really have to voice out my disappointment and disbelief at her opinion about what “real” art “should” be. The Oxford dictionary defines art as “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power”. Whatever is on display now at Yoko Ono’s exhibit is an application of her imagination and creativity. It may not be beautiful or emotionally gripping for some, but I’m sure each piece holds a special meaning for her as the artist. I just wish people would learn to realize that, not just in this case, but in general. Seriously, it’s one thing to call a piece of art weird. It is a completely closed-minded perspective to say that it is sad that certain pieces get exhibited even if they are weird, while other “real” art pieces don’t. Just my honest opinion.

And now that this is out of my system, I’d just like to wish everyone a very happy Wednesday!

An Interview With, Well, Me!

June 18, 2012 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan Leave a Comment

As of last Thursday, I am officially a World Moms Blog contributor! Here’s an excerpt from my first entry, an interview post to introduce myself as a new member of the community.

Why do you blog/write?

I’ve always loved writing, and I used to write letters back and forth with some good friends throughout grade school and high school. When I went to college, I decided to start my first blog as a sort of public letter to no one, and I was surprised that a lot of people actually started reading and sending comments and feedback.

When I discovered I was pregnant, I started a new blog in an attempt to chronicle my experiences as a first time mom. Back then, there wasn’t much of a network of online moms to turn to, and so I wanted to be able to write everything down in case someone needed some advice in the future. The funny thing is, looking back and reading my old posts now, I don’t think I’d recommend my pregnant self to new moms. Oh well, at least I tried.

Fast forward a couple of years, I had the chance to meet a Filipino novelist who successfully published his first book, and made a name for himself internationally. I told him that one of my life’s dreams is to publish a novel, and I asked for tips on how to get started. He told me that he took inspiration from the very successful Nora Roberts, and that she said all you have to do is get your butt in a chair and start writing. Ever since that day, I decided to make it a point to write more, and to keep on writing. And so my blogging self was reborn.

I hope you all read the rest of the post, and visit World Moms Blog to read more wonderful stories from fabulous moms all over the world!

Life is Nice.

May 29, 2012 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 4 Comments

Today is Day Four of Funemployment. Right now, I’m waiting for our rice cooker to tell me that the rice is cooked.

It’s been a fun four days so far, mostly spent with family, doing fun, family things including a Videoke showdown, Monopoly Deal challenge, and XBox Olympics. I’ve also read halfway through The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and a few chapters of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I’m still getting used to digital reading. I enjoy the feel of flipping a real piece of paper more than swiping my finger on a touch screen to go to the next page. But I like how light my bag is sans my Dragon Tattoo book, which now has a new place on my bedside table. It’s place in my purse has been taken by Benjamin Button, and all his other friends in my Kindle library. I am now in search for the perfect case, and if anyone can tell me where to get one in Manila, I will love you a whole lot more than I already do now.

Tomorrow, I will be doing my first big project as a freelance writer. It’s something I started on while still employed, one of my live continuity writing gigs. But this is the first time I will be joining an event post employment. It will be a lot of fun for sure, and I’m very excited about doing something serious and adult.

Now I want to ask all of you to keep your fingers crossed for me, so things will work out like I hope they will. I really like having time to spend at home with my little boy, and I want to keep doing this. It might be too early to say that this is the right thing to do, but my gut tells me that it is. And my little boy is happy, and that’s basically the point of it all. So yeah, let’s keep our fingers crossed, shall we?

Funemployed

May 26, 2012 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan Leave a Comment

Today is day one of me being a work at home mom!

Round of applause please, I finally did it!

Of course, it’s the weekend so I don’t really feel it yet. Today was spent with family, at home, eating lots of food, playing games and watching TV. My idea of a relaxing Saturday, and something I’ve not had since I started working at the mall. So if there’s one thing I’m immediately happy about, it’s having my Saturday back.

I just really wanted to share the news, because this is a big step for me, and I’m really very excited about the changes I’m about to make. This is it!

Time to get a little sentimental now, with a great big thank you to my team at Festival Supermall. You guys made my stay extra fun and exciting, and I will miss you all every day. But since I live close by, chances are I will see you all again real soon. Like I said, this isn’t goodbye, just see you later.
