5 Reasons to invest in a security system for your property

December 13, 2018 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan Leave a Comment

The most important reason to invest in a security system is the safety of your family. Your property comes second since you do not want criminals to destroy your many years of hard work. Fortunately, the importance of security systems surpasses safety. Security companies such as alarmrelay.com have gone a long way to improve their services. Today, your system can alert emergency personnel before you even decide to call them. If all the questions about the importance of securing your property are bobbing in your mind, you are in the right place. Here are five reasons to invest in a security system for your property.

1. Securing your family and property. The first reason to invest in a security system is to secure your family and property. According to the newest home burglary report, every 1 minute, four burglary takes place. This figure translates to around 6,000 thefts in a day. A home burglary can happen to anyone including you. Installing a security system protects your home and valuables. The security system means you keep your family safe from potential break-ins. The FBI burglary report states that 1 in 3 homes without a security system will fall victim to break-ins compared to 1 in 250 households with security systems.

2. Protection from fires. A security system can also protect your property from fires. Have a security camera in place. There is always a report on home fires. A home security system provides the early warning signs of smoke in the house. Heat detectors will warn you about sources of heat. These detectors can determine if a fire is about to build up and provide you with prior notice of the smallest changes in temperature. As a result, you can act fast and prevent any fire from destroying your property.

3. Manage Electricity. Home security helps you to monitor your home’s energy use. Many people leave their homes only to realize that they left a light on or some accessory running. Some home security systems have features that allow you to shut off the appliance remotely. You can also shut down heating or cooling devices when no one is at home and turn them back on just before you arrive.

4. Lower your Insurance Premium. If you own a house (or thinking of having one), you must think of insurance. Home insurance is one reason you need home security. The insurance cost depends on coverage, payment option, location type of home, and other factors. The homeowner’s insurance policy covers losses and damages that may occur from different devastating events. Many insurance companies offer discounts to homeowners who have installed a security system. The companies realize that you have already taken measures to protect against loss and damage.

5. Protect from Odorless Gas. Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas found in combustion fumes. If unchecked, the gas could build up and lead to carbon monoxide poisoning leading to death. You can fit your home security system with carbon monoxide detectors. The detectors will signal you if there are high levels of carbon monoxide before it is too late.

While all these are the right reasons to have a security system installed in your home, you must prepare for the monthly maintenance costs.

4 Tips to helping your baby get a better night of sleep

November 30, 2018 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan Leave a Comment

If your baby sleeps well at night, the same is bound to happen to you because you don’t have to worry about waking up every hour to rush to your baby’s room. If you find yourself getting woken up by those cries more often during the night, the following tips will help you get your baby to get a better night of sleep;

Comfort is key

If you want your baby to have a better night of sleep, then make sure that he is comfortable before going to bed. Ensure that he is in comfortable pajamas that are made of soft cotton and that they are not too tight. Also, a comfortable crib is another great way to ensure that your baby sleeps well at night. Check the temperatures of the room to make sure that they offer a favorable environment for your baby to sleep in.

Be consistent

One of the reasons your baby doesn’t sleep well at night may be because of your inconsistent nighttime routine. Just like grown-ups, a baby needs to have a night time routine that allows her to go to bed at a certain time. Establishing a consistent nighttime routine will help to create good sleep patterns for your baby. So, if you like reading her stories or singing to them to prepare her to sleep, then ensure you do so a few minutes before bedtime and repeat the same every day.

Don ’t be too quick to respond

If you are always quick to rush to your baby’s room every time he calls out then you may be forced to do so until he grows up a little older. Babies learn quickly, so if they are used to your quick response, it may remain like that for a long while. Delay for a few seconds when the child cries and stay even longer the next time he starts crying in the middle of the night. However, your baby’s raspy voice may not be his usual snuffle, so when you notice strange sounds then make a doctor’s appointment for him.

Give larger portions during dinner time

Another trick to ensuring that your baby sleeps well at night is to increase her dinner portions. The lighter her dinner will be, the more she is likely to wake up at night hungry. This is why you need to ensure that her dinner portions are more compared to other meals during the day. If you are breastfeeding, stay a bit longer than you normally do and if she feeds on formula then make sure there are a few more ounces than her normal feed.

Bottom line

Every parent knows the struggle of waking up several times in the night every day to tend to their baby’s needs. There is no specific way to help your baby sleep better at night, but a few adjustments will go a long way to help her sleep well. Try out the above tips and find out what works best for your baby then stick to it.

4 Tips to Planning for an Electrician to Come Over

November 22, 2018 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan Leave a Comment

Whether you want to remodel your home or fix a flickering light, you will always need an electrician. Many electricians are waiting for your call, but you need to hire a licensed professional. This guide walks you through the things you need to consider when planning to hire an electrician. You will learn about the cost of hiring electricians and means of keeping the project cost down. Most importantly, you will learn about the questions that you need to ask your electrician before and after the job. Here are four tips to planning for an electrician to come over.

1. How to hire an Electrician. Before you make the first call, you need to research and arm yourself with information that will give you the confidence to hire the right professional for the job. Knowing about some basic wiring techniques will help you understand the problem you are experiencing.

Familiarize yourself with the costs per hour specific to your project. Knowing what charges to expect makes you plan better when bidding. Consider finding local professionals near you. An excellent way of searching for professionals is to read reviews. Sites such as Houston electricity rates will provide a link to several professionals. Always get multiple quotes and callbacks.

2. Don ’t be Misled by an Electrician’s Hourly Rate. Do not pay too much attention to the hourly rate charged by electricians. The charges should go hand in hand with the firm’s quality of work, equipment, and experience. A skilled and well-equipped professional with higher costs is better than an inexperienced electrician with inadequate tools who is charging less. Experienced electricians will get the job done quickly with warrantied work.

3. Bundle repair jobs together. A good strategy of saving up on money and time on electric work is to bundle your projects together. Write down any electrical problem you discover in your home. When you feel it is time to do the repairs, review your list and inspect your home for additional issues. When the electrician arrives, get everything taken care of at once.

You can also save money by comparing the travel charges. Many professionals spend much time navigating traffic on their way to a job site. Every electrician must find a way to pay for the travel expense.

4. How to Prepare Before the Electrician Arrives. The following tips will help you prepare your project and deal with inconveniences.

  • Explain your needs to your contractor when you make the first call. The more they know, the more prepared they will get and the quicker the job will go.
  • Ensure that the electrical panel box is accessible.
  • Remove any fragile item from the area where you expect them to work.
  • Ask any question before the job starts. Most electricians will walk you through the problems and the fixing process.
  • After the work is complete, ask about potential issues. Professionals will always spot potential hazards as they work.
  • Prepare to lose power while electricians are working.
  • Prepare to either pay at the time of service or have a bill sent to you. You can either pay with cash, credit or write a check.

Now you have the confidence to call an electrician and have all of your problems fixed. Remember to ask if the firm is licensed and whether they have a warrant for their work before hiring.

What Does It Mean To Be A Homemaker?

October 3, 2018 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 14 Comments

As women, wives and mothers, I feel that we will always, in a way, be homemakers. Always. Whether we stay at home, work from home, spend our days at an office or run a business, many of us choose to put caring for our families and managing our households first, before everything else. This makes us homemakers. As far as I’m concerned, It makes me a homemaker.

As a homemaker, my life’s focus is this: To raise a family and to make a home. This means making sure that everyone is well fed, safe, and happy. It means keeping our house as clean and orderly as I possibly can, and staying on top of laundry loads and piles of dirty dishes. It means making sure that the home we live in is filled with positivity, openness, trust and love.

It means learning to let go when things fall through the cracks, and not freaking out when our stack of dirty clothes becomes taller than I am. It’s taking things a day at a time, one task at a time, until everything is done. It means staying positive when money is tight, and planning fun family activities when we have a little extra to spare. This is what being a homemaker means to me.

Back when this was just a house, not yet our home.

To others, homemaking may look a little different. Some manage their households and care for their families by expertly commanding a troop of helpers and household staff. Some are hands-on, full-time, efficient and precise. Others do what they can in between the time they spend in the office and the hours they have at home. Some homemakers are parents, and some are spouses, while others actually live alone.

Regardless of the type of homemakers that we are, we all try our best, both for ourselves and for the loved ones that surround us. It isn’t easy, not in the least. Feeling overwhelmed is natural, as is the feeling that we could lose our minds at any given time. But we don’t quit, because we know that our families depend on us. We do it because we enjoy living in a home. Not just a house, but a home. We do it because we understand that what we do matters, and ultimately, because we love what we do.

===

Side note! I’d love the chance to connect with fellow Filipino homemakers out there, whether you’re currently residing in the Philippines or elsewhere. Everyone’s welcome – Girls, guys, singles, married people, parents, anyone! Just as long as you see yourself as a homemaker.

Less Thinking, More Doing

August 10, 2018 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan 9 Comments

Today’s realization: If I keep thinking about what to write about instead of just sitting down and writing, nothing is ever gonna get written.

I’ve spent the last two weeks trying to figure out what my next post ought to be about. I’ve been making an issue out of this because (1) I know for sure that I want to make some content changes around here to suit the stuff I have going on in my life right now, (2) I feel like I want to hide my archives, not all of it but most of it, and (3) I want to have my blog re-designed. This facelift is long overdue but I simply (still) cannot afford to do it right now.

It’s gotten to a point where I’m stuck in a sort of analysis paralysis phase, and I know that the only way to get out of it is to write. Just write. I don’t think it matters much what I write about, as long as I do it. So here I am writing about writing. Or writing about not writing, is more like it.

To be honest, a part of me also considered giving up and just closing this blog. Most days, I don’t feel like sharing anyway, even on social media. I’ve been enjoying the quietness of my life lately, and keeping things to myself has helped to maintain that wonderful quiet. I also haven’t had the time to write simply because I’ve chosen not to make time for it. There are so many other things I’d rather do instead, like read and binge-watch Netflix (I know, so bad!) Plus, there’s the never-ending list of chores and errands that (apparently haha) comes with being a stay at home mom.

I may not be super busy with work anymore, but I sill feel like there aren’t enough hours in a day to get everything done. Bakit ganon??? . . So here I am, making a list of everything I need to do while sitting in the car waiting for the kid to get out of rondalla practice. If only I could prepare dinner narin while waiting, diba? 😂 . . #adultinglikeyoumeanit #multitaskingishard #hatidsundogang #thismomlife #buhayhousewife

Given all of this, I realized that I needed to take a break from writing, and I’m glad that I did. That brief pause actually allowed me to miss it, a feeling that I hadn’t felt in a long time. Writing for a living tends to burn you out that way, I think. And sometimes you just need to take a step back. It’s not for forever, because that pull, that nagging desire to write eventually becomes too strong to ignore. Today I am answering that call with a post that I know is pretty pointless. But hey, it’s a start.

Don’t worry, I will be writing about things that make sense again soon. On my list, just so you know (and so I don’t forget because #tanders,) are:

  • Various musings, learnings and realizations about being a housewife and stay at home mom,
  • Our attempts at decluttering, and generating less waste at home,
  • The rollercoaster ride that is tween parenting,
  • And the yummy new food I recently tried at Earth Origins. Sneak peek below!

Pulled chicken adobo. Topped with a crunchy slaw drizzeld with lemon ginger sauce. Atop a charcoal bun. Plus freshly made shoestring potatoes with fresh curry leaves on the side. Yummmmmm! Annnnd… There’s also a pulled pork teriyaki version that is equally fantabulous! 📸 by @manila.gent at @earthorigins

Writing soon, I promise, and I hope you’ll be there to read when I do. Hiatus, over!

SAHM I Am

June 12, 2018 by MrsC | Patricia Cuyugan Leave a Comment

A lot has changed in the last three weeks.

First, I finally said goodbye to life in events. I thought about my decision long and hard, and it wasn’t an easy one to make. I’ve been in this industry from the very beginning, working as an intern on my first event in 2004. It’s been really fun and exciting, but also an immensely stress-filled 14 years. I knew for certain, after my last one, that it was time to move on from the world of events.

Officially a #SAHM. (Long post ahead!) . . It has been 5 days since this photo was taken, 5 days since my last event ended, which means I’m 5 days into retirement. Shifting from the #WAHMLife to the #SAHMLife is certainly not easier, nor is it any less busy. Except now, instead of deadlines and clients plus meal plans and laundry piles, I only have the family and the household to deal with. Lakas maka “only”, no? 😂 As if it were really that simple. . . People keep asking me what I’m going to do, now that I’m done with events. The honest answer is nothing. At least for a while. I’m excited to finally be able to focus on being mom, wife, cat mama, and homemaker. First time ito, guys! Ever since we had the manchild, even before graduating college, I’ve been working na. I was never not working! For the first time ever, I’m actually gonna stop. Scary, and I might get super bored, but I’m excited about it.😉 . . PS I love this dress from @smwomanplus. They make THE BEST #plussize clothes. This one’s so comfy! I have survived several 15-hour event days wearing it. It’s easy to dress it up with wedges or heels, and to dress it down with sneakers. Sana I had it in all colors, seriously!🖒 . . #athomewithmrsc #buhayhousewife #earlyretirement #lifedeclutter #stressless #fashionforeverywoman

We also got a cat! A week before I officially retired, I saw a post on Bianca Elizalde’s IG stories about some kittens she had rescued and was putting up for adoption. That same night, I asked the husbandry if we could take one. To my surprise, he said yes right away. After exchanging a few messages, Bianca and I agreed to meet up one sunny Saturday in Makati. On that day, we welcomed Nougat the House Cat to our family. What a joy it has been having her at home these past few weeks!

This is #NougatTheHouseCat. We adopted her exactly a week ago after she was rescued by @biancaelizalde. In the 7 days that we’ve had her, she’s proven to be the most perfect little kitty for our family and our home. . . In the mornings, she greets us with loud meows, both out of excitement and obvious annoyance at having been left alone for several hours while we slept. She enjoys being around people, and easily warms up to house guests. She eats and drinks a lot. And I mean A LOT. As in ManChild levels. She 💩s a lot, too. 😂 . . She’s super playful, and loves crumpled paper balls, ribbons and strings, and her mouse toy that already looks chewed to death after only a few days. She’s also super lambing, likes to sleep on our laps, chests and tummies, and allows me to smother her with hugs. I’ve always wanted a lap cat. Now I have one. And I love her so much. . . This little kitty brings so much joy to our home. We are so lucky to be her family. 💕 . . #catsofinstagram #instacat #catstagram #rescuecat #rescuepet #petstagram #petsofinstagram #adoptdontshop #puspinlove #catsofmanila 📸@rachelle_lauren

Then, summer ended, and school began. Right on cue, rainy season rolled in. Along with it came a typhoon and the first class suspension of the school year, only four days after school started. The no-school day fell in between a Sunday and a holiday, too, which meant an instant 4-day weekend for us. Ang galing, diba?

No longer a baby talaga.

Side kwento: The Man Child (formerly known as Little MrC) is now in Junior High. He’s also an active member of his school rondalla, complete with practice schedules, workshops and performances. It’s gonna be a busy year for him, which means it will be a busy year for me. I’m not complaining, after all I wanted this kind of life. It’s really nice to see my son interacting with kids outside his batch, and enjoying being part of a new group in school. My siblings and I had a lot of fun participating in extracurricular activities when we were students, and I’m glad that this is something my son gets to do, too.

Tomorrow, if the weather permits (and it looks like it will), the boys go back to school and work, and things go back to normal over here. This is a new normal for me, staying at home, spending time with Nougat, and prioritizing housework above everything else. I feel just as tired as before, but 100% less stressed, which is great. I feel happier and a lot more fulfilled, too, even though I’m mostly just washing things throughout the day (like dishes and clothes, and cat butt). I’m totally loving this life! (Well, so far. LOL.)

We’re all so tired from the first week of school. And to think, 3 days lang naman may pasok this week! Thank God it’s finally Friday. #NougatTheHouseCat
